  • It's all Ulfric's fault!

In a recent thread, where I was debating the merits of the E-M5 (kindly loaned to me for a day by Paul/Smartwombat), Ulfric made this suggestion:-

"I'm thinking a cheapo e-P2 would suit you fine as a stop-gap since you already have the important bit : VF-2."

John I know someone who would probably be interested in your 17mm if you choose to let it go.

Thanks Phil, I'll try it before I decide and will let you know.

So you've not had the 17mm before?

(So nice to have my own thread)

No, never used one. It's often critisized for mediocre performance (compared to what is commonly expected of a modern prime) but many people still love it. I prefer to keep an open mind and welcome the chance to try one.

It's not a bad lens - what Oly lens is? You will get some good results out of it, that I know.

These give you an idea of focal length and resistance to flare, which I find outstanding.

Good for street and touristy stuff.

                I think this is a 100% crop, not even the centre ;

Thanks Ulfric, nothing wrong with those pictures! A good point about resistance to flare - even the best resolution lens is useless outdoors if it flares at the slightest opportunity. It's easy to forget that overall optical quality relies on far more than resolving power alone. 35mm equivalent (OK, this is 34mm) has long been one of my favourite focal lengths.

This was taken with the 17mm on an E-P2.

Another good shot with the 17mm, but where is it? Part of the Falkirk Wheel?

                            John,

EP-1, VF1 and 17mm is my go everywhere pocket camera.

                            Best pocket camera ever.

I shoot RAW and have made an LR4 preset which corrects distortion and CA in one click.

EP-2 and VF2 would be even better although I guess you would need to take the VF2 off for the pocket.

If you start to think you need a zoom, remember Robert Frank shot The Americans using a 35mm lens.....
