  • HELP! Come on... advise me... I want to be indulged - which lenses to take on hols?

    Hi All

    OK, so I will soon make my mind up about which lenses I will be taking with me on our family holiday to Sharm-el-Sheikh in 4 days, but I thought it would be fun to solicit your opinions too if. So, out of these lenses, which would you suggest I take to accompany my E-5;

    Oly 7-14mm
    Oly 11-22
    Oly 14-54mm MKI
    Oly 70-300mm
    Oly 50mm f2
    Sigma 150mm f2.8
    Oly 40-150mm
    Oly EC1.4

I must be mad this year as we're taking Shannon, too... Heathers lifelong friend. Good gawd... two 15yr old teenage girls... I must be barking.

Can't believe I would even attempt to offer an opinion, but I am ready to be shot down.

14-54mm..... covers wide enough range for landscape and close up portrait's.

40-150mm...... Gives you that little more reach, although I sold mine, it was avery good lens.

        Small travel tripod, remote.

You won't have a need for F2 in my opinion, you only have to deal with lovely blue's and sand, and careful compositions which you are highly capable of should be the order of the day.

Depends where you are going and what you have in mind to shoot, other than family shots
I don't see the 12-60 mentioned so it has to be the 14-54 and 40-150.

Have a great holiday wherever you go.

First on my list would be the 7-14mm

I would go with the 14-54 and the 70-300

may as well take the EC14 as it is so small and easy to carry along.

that would give you complete range from 7-420,,,,,,,,,

Oooh dear me. So many lenses. There's nothing worse than dragging a lens abroad that you don't use - apart from missing a shot because you didn't take lens X...

OK. There's going to be lots of light so my 3 lens pick form your pile would be 7-14, 14-54 and 40-150 (I assume there will be so much heat haze that the 70-300 would be a problem at the long end)

My 2 lens pick would be the 14-54 and the 40-150 again. That 40-150 is very good when stopped down to f8, and the 14-54 is the ideal one lens solution for the evenings.

I have to make a similar decision for a trip to Italy based on the E-M5 and my mixed bag of lenses.

                Zuiko 7-14mm f/4 for landscapes

                Zuiko 50mm f/2 for portraits and close-ups

                Sigma 150mm f/2.8 for tele.

and of course the EC-14 for either 50mm (more macro) or Sigma 150mm (more tele).

I somehow the "everyday" zoom to be the least used lens because it doesn't really specializes in anything.
It is of course necessary, but mostly for "everyday" situations.... but holidays is not an everyday situation.

You go to a special place for a few days and you want your pictures to be awsome. And for awsome pictures you need awesome lenses, specialized for their specific purposes that will give you that extra advantage.

Zuiko 7-14mm is the ultimate lens for Landscapes. Far better than the 14mm focal lenth of 14-54...
Also, it has clearly better corner sharpness than Zuiko 11-22mm.

Zuiko 50mm f/2 if the ultimate lens for close-ups and protraits. Far better than 14-54 @ 50mm f/5-5.6 (its best aperture setting for that focal length).

Sigma 150mm f/2.8 is bright sharp lens that can be combined effectively with EC-14 and still be bright enough for most (if not all) situations.
I agree it's bulky but Zuiko 70-300 is not the sharpest lens out there.
Sure it's lighter but personally if I had the Sigma, I would sell 70-300 and buy an EC-14 instead.
After breaking through the technology barrier,
you run into the barrier of accepted wisdom.

7-14, 14-54 and hire a 50-200. Throw them in a bag with the E-5 and EC-14 and you've got a great lightweight travel kit.
It's the image that's important, not the tools used to make it.

Well, just to put my two cents' in...

I'll be spending 3 weeks in the US this summer and have decided not to take everything and the kitchen sink, including my Gigapan Pro head. The reason is that it's not really a vacation (dropping my younger daughter off to college and then seeing my father, who is doing poorly).

Hence I'll be traveling with only a Kata 3N1-20, filled with my E30+12/60+70/300+50 and my EPL1+VF2+14, along with multiple battery packs, multiple chips and a few filters. A 4/3->m4/3 adapter goes along as well. Instead of a large tripod, the Gorilla Pod Pro will be in with the rest, attached to the outside of the Kata. The chargers will be in my travel bag.

I'll be using my Acer Tablet as well, with an external USB chip reader and an Eye-Fi chip in the EPL1. An external 500 GB FAT32 2.5" USB drive goes along for backups...

The mixture is for multiple uses: the E30 and three lenses for when I want to schlepp and have a comprehensive set of lenses, but the EPL1 with the 14 for when traveling more lightly. The 12-60 works nicely on the EPL1 as well...

                      FWIW I'd go

7-14mm - the best "wow-factor" lens I've used (admittedly not from a large fiewld, but there you go) and ideal for landscapes.

The 70-300mm gives you a large range of options for generally use - and an excuse to get away from those two teenage girls!

Having packed all that I'd probably decide that sticking the 50mm in as an high quality portrait lens isn't going to add that much weight!!

I would keep to two lenses for convenience and from your list it would have to be the 14-54 and 70-300. Pity you didn't have 12-60 as that would be close to your beloved 11-22! I took my 7-14 on a recent holiday as part of a three lens combo and although I did use it a bit it was a bit of an effort. Two lenses is the way to go IMO.

Went last November to India with this combo:
                            14-42mm
                            40-150mm
                            70-300mm

In your case I would opt for:
7-14mm, 14-54mm, 40-150mm and the 70-300mm. Also would take the Ec1.4 just in case. Further take a external flash unit with you and a lightweight tripod comes in handy as well.
