  • I Finally Understand

The only thing that kept putting me off Lightroom was my results using the sharpening and noise reduction tool, especially on noisy images.

Now I finally understand the Detail Panel in Lightroom after reading a old article by Jeff Schewe.

It was like a light bulb suddenly clicked on.

Lets face it even ISO 800 on the E-30 is a little bit noisy even though the noisiest images looks good at web size.

Blue Tit at ISO 800 and a 100% crop where it counts when judging noise, looks like I will be using LR more now.

    Regards Paul.
One day I hope to be the person my dogs think I am.

Great picture - and noise is clearly not a problem - it looks a tad over-sharpened to me perhaps... I'm seeing zigzag artifacts on the stem so that must be having some effect on the bird...? Or maybe that was your point ?

1-It is a screen grab hence the smaller image has zig zags because of screen intopolation.

2-The line itself is the light striking the edge of the bamboo shoot.

Perhaps a 100% crop of before LR Raw processing and after would help better.

And considering the original image was not bitingly sharp and all the extra sharpening needed the noise is handled pretty well following Jeff's advise.

And I managed to track the forum post down for those who are interested and can follow Jeff Schewe's advise.

I'd say you've done a great job with the sharpening!

Which version of LR are you using, Paul? The guys in that thread are talking about possibilities when LR3 is released. Things have moved on somewhat since LR2!!

LR4 but the principle is the same especially the correlation between the noise and the detail slider that Jeff Schewe of Adobe emphasises that not many other "experts" on LR mention in there books or tutorials.

Its made a big difference as to how I approach sharpening and noise reduction in LR4 since the light went on and I now ignore the standard leave it on 1radius 25 detail and alter the sharpening slider,or there abouts.
