  • Right Now?

Another day at the office. What am I looking at right now?

Three thousand six hundred lines of buggy assembler code, two terminal emulator windows, a digital scope, a micro controller and it's display and a system emulator: I designed this stuff so it's up to me to make it work.

This last six months have been much the same, except for two funerals, an operation and a house clearance to organise. Down the end of the office I can see that it is a sunny day outside.

Current situation: Worn out, tired, Headache.

Can I have a holiday please
Look, I'm an old man. I shouldn't be expected to put up with this.

Ooooh, I remember writing a few lines of Motorolla 6809 assembly language code. Nothing special or complex, just an intro... takes me back.

    Good luck with the mnemonics!

Ooooh BASIC.... loved BASIC... especially BBC BASIC!

I wrote a POS programme for a local shoe retailer many years ago in BBC BASIC - only on the one terminal, but that could manage multiple people logging in and going through the sale. Was a lot of fun!

Hmm, I think there should be a law that prevents someone as old as me having to write this much assembler

Assembler has it's uses. A customer asked how quickly our interface responded to their serial comms multi byte data packet. I told them the gap between their last byte and our first reply byte was about forty microseconds. They went rather quiet.

My wife used to be a Coder, including Assembler on IBM mainframes, when I was a lowly Op. Now she's got a proper job, cleaning up after Earls! Beware of what you wish for!

Don't feel too bad, you're not the only one with programming issues!

We use C# in Visual Studio and I've been struggling with a new report for days; our project is a bit of a monster too, we have 250+ business objects and over 600 Stored Procedures in SQL Server... plus I'm also doing my OU project which means I spend most of the night programming!

I haven't done any assembler for years, though I did write a game in pure assembler on my Amiga back in the day.

Oh wow, the Amiga... what a machine. Motorolla 68000 I believe! My first foray into MIDI was with the Amiga.

PS: I think I still have an Amiga up in the attic somewhere!

I know I still have my Amiga in the attic!

Indeed it was a 68000, it was pretty amazing what people could get out of such basic (by today's standard) hardware!

I'm still proud of the fact I got a "selection of the month" award from Amiga Format in the Public Domain section!

                      Re: Right Now?

This brings back memories. The college I attended had a connection with Nat Semi in Greenock and was given two of their old semiconductor ovens without the controllers. My final year project was to design a controller using a modified Rockwell AIM 65 R6502. I did it in assembler, then did it again in BASIC when I discovered by installing 2 4K ROMs I could use a BASIC interpreter. Had it all working nicely, added some bells and whistles to the presentation interface, got my sister to type up the 80 page submission with me providing hand drawings and graphs - these were the days before word processors. Added too many bells and whistles at the last moment and the controller malfunctioned. Ended up winging my way through the practical demonstration to my peers with the controller back running assembler but their documents with a couple of hundred lines of BASIC code that didn't really work.
