  • OM-D sensor

I hope that this is the correct forum to post this.

Looking at the supposedly leaked specs of the OM-D there is mention of "5 axis image stabilisation". At present the highly regarded E5 IS system uses two axes (vertical and horizantal) so I assume that the new camera needs rotational, yaw and tilt as well.

The big question is why is that needed? The only reason I can think of is that a new sensor may have appreciable depth - which opens up the possibility that a non-bayer sensor is being used. I would like to think that it is the long rumoured "triad" sensor

Stop it now! I am getting too excited.

Of course it does not matter how they work the magic, as long as it works. The quoted ISO range and implied DR range would seem to imply a sensor about three times as sensative as the one in the E5 and that's just the sort of improvement a non-bayer sensor should be able to achieve. Whatever is being offered it seems to be a quantum step forward from existing sensors

There's an awful lot of speculation buzzing around about this camera at the moment, what ever it turns out to be I truly hope it gives Olympus a serious 'leg up'.
Plus.... I hope it focusses my 4/3rds lenses in an appropriately speedy 'E-5' manner

Wouldn't it be great if they had managed to make the Foveon sensor work properly..

Then, maybe we are missing the hint. OM-D?? OM3D Yes, it's a 3D camera..
Look, I'm an old man. I shouldn't be expected to put up with this.

That alone would be enough to make me an eventual adopter but at the moment I am well satisfied with my E5

Just don't get too excited about the "new" sensor. If it was truly groundbreaking who would supply it? Panasonic? Sony? But why would they let Olympus have the glory first, rather than putting it into one of their own cameras? Can't see that happening.

What I can see is the existing 16mp sensor tweaked by Olympus. That might be a marginal improvement but any more than that I would hesitate to speculate. I hope I'm wrong.

Personally I'd settle for a slightly improved (DR and noise) 12mp sensor, the existing one isn't all that bad. The main improvement I would hope for is in AF performance when using FT lenses.

If it were to be the Triad it would consist of three fairly ordinary sensors attached to different sides of a clever beam spliting lens, all mounted in a cradle stabalised over multiple axes. Oly are rather good at optics and IS, plus anybody could supply the sensors.

I do hope I am right

Knowing our luck it will be a revolutionary new sensor developed (and to be made by) Kodak.

I wish you was right, that could save Kodak at the eleventh hour - quite apart from what it might do for Olympus.

Thanks Roger, I see. All the cleverness comes after the sensor, so a present bog standard sensor (or three of them) will do. You never know......

I thought that the Kodak sensor division had already been spun off and was alive and well
