  • Google Plus - anyone using it?

I'm interested to know whether anyone here is using Google + as a means to show images to their friends, acquaintances, Forum friends, etc., and if so, whether to set up one for this Forum or general Oly users!

I'm still trying to work out the pros and cons for myself, work interests, etc., but some ideas seems potentially quite useful.

    Regards
    Chris

Yes, I'm using it, and have been for some time - it's superb for photography.

Never heard of it - is it just another photo sharing site like Flickr?

Janet and Chris, perhaps you could explain what it is we're talking about ... I hesitate to google "Google +" because as we all know there is always a small chance of breaking the internet with such things.

Re: Google Plus - anyone using it?

Go on Ulfric, google it and end life as techies know it!!

Well where do you start with what is Google +?

In a modern world where many people don't talk to each other, write or call, there is a maze of social networking applications that help quiet shy people make contact with other people. It gives many of these shy quiet people )and obviously I'll put myself in this category) the opportunity to update these other people with what we are doing at that very minute, as well as the chance for them to see thousands of blurry photos of our latest debauched party little of which we can remember!
And for all of these people Facebook is the means to disseminate all this fascinating news. Some people are very lucky and manage to have several hundred friends which personally I find very upsetting because I only seem to have 20-30 friends and none of those seem inclined to contact me every minute of the day.

So, that's one view of social networking in the modern day.

The other is, that like so many things, there are some good aspects and there are some annoying failings. So how and what can be used to try to get the best out of the way many people want to keep in touch? What are the key features that are good? What are the implications of all of our lives being spread about on the internet?
I personally prefer to try to use social networking as a tool - I can use it to keep up to date with friends or to update them; I can show off my work or promote particular projects; I keep my personal details to a minimum and restrict my friendship groups to those I tend to see reasonably often in the year; I can use it to expand on and develop ideas and projects; etc., etc. And most of all, it does keep me in touch with friends during our busy lives.

But there are aspects of my life that go beyond just keeping in touch with my immediate friends. And more especially there are also areas of overlap where, for example, my photographs may be of interest to my friends and also to Olympus users. There may also be another crossover/overlap with the fact that not only did I visit, for example, a wonderful garden with some friends, using my Olympus camera and got some stunning results, but also I saw some interesting ideas that might be of interest to my garden design business or to a client. Perhaps there was also a really beautiful white Peacock that my wildlife friends might find interesting.
So what Google + does is use this idea of circles that can overlap the different friendship groups, interests, work clients, etc., rather than there being just a big mass of friends who would all see the images even of no interest to them.
So, what I am interested in in this case, is how could I use the idea of friendship/interest/work group circles to improve the spread of my imagery, so that rather than bore everyone I can easily select who recieves the imagery.
By creating a variety of circles I could potentially select to send my images only to those who might want to see them. So in the example above, I might send the images to my Friends A circle, my Olympus users circle, my Work A circle and my Wild friends circle (if only!!). All my other family and friends would not recieve the images.

Now this is only my interpretation of Google + after a short look at it, hence my query to see if others are using it and what their views are. It's good to see that Janet obviously has found a use for it and perhaps she would like to add in her interpretation / explanation of Google + and how she is using it.

In the meantime for the real cynics have a look at http://m.collegehumor.com/#/video/66...ot-google-plus
We all need to deal with real people occasionally I guess!!

            Regards
            Chris
