Re: Street Photography in London...
The cops seemed fairly chilled, the security misinformed.
TBH in teh current climate I wouldn't have a problem with being asked what I was up to in similar circumstances.hearts at peace under an English heaven

Re: Street Photography in London...
No problems here with people taking photos as far as I've ever seen or heard, and very often I see people in the centre of town snapping away, some even with tripods.Originally posted by ChrisW View PostInteresting video.
In my limited experience, I have not seen anybody have any problems with security people or Police in Edinburgh, how about in Dundee?
I may be wrong, but think it's very much a south of the border paranoia....

I think you are a bit wide of the mark Dek.
Its just London where everyone there seem to be way up their own A about their own importance & sense of entitlement.
I work at places all over the UK where "security" carry sub-machine guns and have never encountered any unreasonableness - North or South.E1, E520, ED14-42, ED 40-150, 70-300, Various legacy including 50mm f2 macro.

Re: Street Photography in London...
Isn't that exactly the problem - the machine gun carriers are trained and have solid orders so know what they can and can't do. The (often) eastern European and other nationalities that form the army of private 'security' personnel in London seem to rarely have a decent structure above them issuing orders so do not actually know the law or what they can and cannot try and enforce. The army of PCSO's may also fall into this category.Originally posted by Homer Simpson View PostI think you are a bit wide of the mark Dek.

It's such rubbish. Any terrorist would have a little Pen (or smaller) if on reconnaissancen not a whacking great DSLR, long lenses and a tripod.

Re: Street Photography in London...
Yeah, apologies, it probably is just London.... I never had any problems when I was there, but was just photographing around the touristy bits, which I'd imagine happens every minute of every day.
It's just such a stupid paranoid overreaction; you can't take pictures of our building from a public thoroughfare, sorry! Eh? I'd understand if it was GCHQ, but not a bliddy bank or offices.

Re: Street Photography in London...
Funnily enough a couple of months ago I saw a man and woman in their late 20's being stopped and questioned at Edinburgh Airport about 200m from the terminal building. They were photographing the tower which is in a public area and 47m tall so not hard to miss as you can see below. I think they drew attention to themselves by having a tripod and hulking great Nikon. In the space of time of me parking my car 2 foot patrol officers and then a van load descended on them. I took these images from the staff car park - right beside an observation camera pylon a couple of years ago with my trusty E-410.

You might not like it but it is quite an imposing structure so you can well understand why people photograph it.
I also saw a couple of young guys aged about 20 or so being stopped at 8am a couple of weekends ago. This time in it was in my local botanical gardens. They were taking pictures of the plants and trees again with a large SLR.
Maybe it's just camera envy.Jamie
