  • Mmmm - flash problem.

A very good friend of ours liked the E-510's we sport and went out and bought the company - I fib of course, however he did buy himself an E-510.
He sent me a picture today with the following comment:

    Hi Barrie
I was using the 14-42 lens. See attached pic. You’ll see the “shadow” where the flash doesn’t reach because of the lens hood.
I have not noticed this myself as I use the FL-36. I have taken a test shot this evening using the onboard flash and I get a similar shadow.

    Shadow.

    Help/suggestions/thoughts would be most appreciated.

Maybe stating the obvious but you say he is using a lens hood with onboard flash? Has he tried removing the hood?

Thanks for the quick respose John. I did run that through my mind before posting but it seemed to obvious. I'm a little slow this evening after a heavy lunch - hic.

LOL hope you enjoyed it Barrie! Yes maybe he should remove the hood and I imagine this will solve the problem

Thanks - by the way my friend emailed me whilst I was putting the first post up as he realised his error.

Lunch was very good as was the Orvieto Amabile.

You may also find that lifting the tilt on the flash up a notch would help. The shaddow is caused when the flash hits the hood, quite common on many cameras when using onboard flash.

When using an xternal flash this is normally elimiated but perhaps with the height of the FL-36 being less than the FL-50 the shaddow problem can still occour.

This is purely an opinon as i don't have the FL-36 flash to test

Seems like a common problem with most newbies. I had the same problem but then it was the 11-22 and the onboard Flash. So now, I carry the FL20 around with me most of the time and I use double flash, if I need to extend the reach.

It is not a problem with the FL36 even with the 11-22 on the FL36 is tall enough to be past it

I've not tried with the 70-300 but that would probably be a problem with just about any flash when fully extended

I doubt it would be a problem with the 70-300 as the angle of view is so narrow any shadow wouldn't be in the picture.

Yup - got home now and extended to 300 + EC-14 with hood and still no shadow.

Also confirmed that 11-22 is no issue even with the hood

                    Both tests on the E-510
