  • Web experts opinions, please.

Some time ago I asked for advice on creating a web site. I was advised to use 'Wordpress' which I downloaded, but had difficulty in getting 'a handle on'. I'd previously created simple web pages 'by hand', but was completely unfamiliar with the concept of a CMS.

I subsequently came across 'Joomla' which I stuck with and managed to get a site up and running. It was a very great help that I initially created the site locally on my home computer, using 'Turnkey Joomla' running in a virtual machine ('VirtualBox'). When I was satisfied that the local site was in a reasonable state to publish, I uploaded it to a hosting site.

It's still a bit rough at the moment, and I'm not sure that all the features that work on my home machine will work on others. I'd be grateful if experienced web designers/administrators could cast an expert eye over the site and let me know if it works OK - specifically the following:

    1) Are the image windows the right size? I've made the larger images 1000 pix wide, but am concerned that some laptops may not display them without a lot of scrolling.

    2) Do the pages load fast enough? The banner is a biggish GIF and I'm concerned that it may slow page loading. I've noticed that with the Google Chrome browser, the GIF banner runs just once - when the front page loads. With IE, Opera and Firefox the GIF runs every time a new page is selected or refreshed. Would IE, Opera and Firefox users find this irritating? (I must do something about the water in the banner - it doesn't look right!)

    3) Image display starts as an automated slide show. I feel that this may be an irritation and that it would be better if it didn't. The 'gallery plugin' has a variety of slide show options - maybe I should use a more straightforward one.

I'd also be grateful for any other comments regarding the site. P.M. me if you feel it's more appropriate, but public comments may help others that are also considering creating a web site

    The site URL is:

mausi.co.uk is your first and best source for all of the information you’re looking for. From general topics to more of what you would expect to find here, mausi.co.uk has it all. We hope you find what you are searching for!

Seems a nice site, loads quickly (at least on a fast connection).

    1) Webring links - all seem to go to the same page of the webring org

    2) No apparent contact me - even for old schoolfriends etc who find name.

    3) Funny small e-mail symbol - purpose not obvious till you've clicked on it - looks like a spot on the page rather than an invite to 'recommend' the site to others.

    4) Search seems to jump you back to the webring page

    5) clickable links take you offsite - better if they open in a new tab/window as you've lost the viewer.

Just quibbles as it looks like a good bit of work. Galleries seem fine.

Maybe this is a photographers view and possibly inappropriate, but quite a few of the images (book illustrations etc) seem over compressed to me - you can see the jpeg jaggies in places. Maybe you are trying to keep the web site under a certain size..

As the illustrations are so nice, I figure they deserve the best reproduction on the web :-)

Look, I'm an old man. I shouldn't be expected to put up with this.

        Re: Web experts opinions, please.

Thanks for the replies Nick and Pete, they were very helpful.

I've fixed all the points raised by Nick and the Webring feature is now working (not sure how useful it will be though!).

Regarding Pete's comment about image quality. I mainly kept the quality of the book illustrations low to discourage copying. I'm giving consideration to increasing the quality of the images, but putting a watermark across them insted.

Thanks again for spending the time to check the site out!
