On my recent foray from north wales to Devon and back and whilst there ,I have to admit that the standard of driving has declined in recent years,seen some really close misses and one where a cyclist got knocked off his bike ..
is it due to overcrowding on motorways or a higher population density but I can’t recall things being this bad ever . And as a long term caravanner I know only to well that the 60mph limit on towing is there to stop the tail wagging the dog effect but we were often passed by other units doing well in excess of that , and don’t get me started on lorries grrrrr

Worst thing I see, and only too often, are drivers who are in the outside lane and cut across three lanes at the last minute to get to the exit sliproad.
They know where they want to get off so why can't they ease their way to the inside lane in plenty of time.

I find that when you are doing 70mph, you are constantly overtaking slower cars and lorries. Thus, I don't see the problem of staying in the centre lane. If the slow lane is empty, then use it, otherwise stay in the safest lane. At 70mph, you are often being overtaken by 80mph'ers Plus...

And that is just the attitude that is at the root of the problem😡Drivers who think that their variation of the law is OK or safer. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr 😡Laws are there to be obeyed and are not open to personal variation.

Maybe staying in the centre lane as you describe, Mark, is OK up to a point, but not if someone is coming up behind you (even if they are exceeding the speed limit) or there is a clear space on the inside lane.

Continually changing lanes in heavy traffic is asking for trouble. And getting stuck in the slow lane causes frustration etc. If the road is light traffic then yes, keep in the inside lane. And are you justifying breaking the speed limit, Ian....?

I don't "hog" the middle lane, like some do, at speeds of 60mph.

TBH, the ones I really dislike, are those doing 50mph on the motorway. You can't judge their speed until you are closing fast, then have to do acrobatics to avoid them....

Lane discipline here in France is not bad, generally, but there are far fewer three lane or greater motorways.

The biggest problem here is tail gating - it's a national epidemic, sadly.

I don't travel more than about 20 miles each way by motorway these days. I tend to get back in the slow lane pretty quickly, not least to avoid being tailgated.

I like the way the French do it. Mostly 2 lane motorways like Ian said. They tend to stay in the inside lane, move out when they get to a slower vehicle then pass and move in again. In England on 2 lane dual carriageways when a lorry is seen 1 mile ahead nearly everyone immediately moves into the outside land and forms a nose to tail queue!

I was tailgated by a chap in France last time for miles on a mostly empty motorway in Brittany. I think the problem was cruise control, he just couldn't be bothered to disengage or adjust it. I had to slow down and force him to pass me.

We need a law that restricts LGVs to lane 1&2. The M25 is often blocked by vehicles limited to 60 MPH, three and even four abreast!

On the motorway I generally drive at 65mph. Yes, adaptive cruise control. And most Scottish motorways are 2 lane.
I find that our roads up here have pulses of traffic usually at 70mph.
They have to pass me. Which is their problem.
I don't have to be anywhere in a hurry. It also helps my fuel consumption. (mean Scotsman )

The main problem on Scottish roads are those with hired campervans and no training and foreign tourists with a hire car just out of the airport (yes a little eastern lady doing 25mph and looking terrified ) or further on dawdling at 40mph ("Isn't that scenery wonderful") without ever using a rear view mirror.
I always look forward to October when it becomes noticeably quieter until Easter.
