Weight and waist size do seem to be risk factors.

WELL, I'm Either DEAD 'walking dead' or very near it. Most of my life I took 3 teaspoons of sugar in my coffee/tea. I'm now 77..I now take 2 sugars in my coffee/tea. I have two cups of coffee every time I get up each day with 2 sugars in each (that's 4 sugars) Throughout the day when home I drink at least 8 cups of coffee. (16 sugars) DUH!! I eat chocolates once a week. I eat three cream slices once a fortnight. I eat lots of sweet stuff (too much really). If I don't have sugar I get a Dry sour mouth, I then feel horrible. I'm a bit fat but that is because I also have a Hiatus Hernia. I got a Blocked Bowel which keeps my Fat in place. What hope is there. If I think about it too much I'd GO MAD as well. So I try not to Dwell on it....If I listen to ALL these Experts I should either be DEAD or I'm going Ruddy Nuts by listening to them. So at 77 years of age I'll carry on as I am..I WILL eat some Turkey and ALL the trimmings tomorrow on the 25th of Xmas Day. I'll also eat Sweet Popcorn on Christmas night watching some movies and drinking a few bottles of Budweiser...All on my Own. So when someone does call in 6 months or more I'll be full of Maggots...MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL..

You could be o.k Dennis but is it worth the risk of not getting it properly checked , as I’ve just found out diabetes is not a laughing matter it can lead to amputations of limbs , loss of sight , or strokes or heart attacks . I’ve got a good wife and a close family where most are in the medical profession.. take care mate it’s not a joke to handle on your own

I'm just over 5 foot 9 inches and in my 40s I was 16 or 17 stone. I'm also half Filipino Chinese, so this adds a genetic disposition to Type 2 diabetes.

I was told after an health insurance medical that I had to lose some eight and I did get down to about 14 stone, but by then the damage had been done and I was finally diagnosed at Type 2 after an ophthalmology exam for something else revealed some retinal bleeds (not serious, thankfully) caused by high blood sugar levels.

I thought I was eating healthily - lots of porridge, wholemeal bread, fruit, fresh fruit juice, etc. - all high carb, and low fat.

This can stress your body's insulin response and you're diabetic when that response gives up, leaving blood sugar levels too high.

I was horrified and immediately researched the subject and found some solid information from a trusted medical researcher, Professor Roy Taylor, at Newcastle University:

Discover how Newcastle University research by Professor Roy Taylor could reverse Type 2 diabetes and change lives. Read the full story.

I was very highly motivated and in under 4 months I went from 13.5 stone to 11.5 stone - 28 pounds lost.

I've bounced back a bit and am currently about 12.3 stone, but I have never needed to take medication. In addition to losing weight, I increased my activity to burn off the calories and improve my fitness. I also switched to a keto diet, which makes the body use up its own fat reserves faster.

It's thought the deep visceral fat that surrounds the organs in your belly, are a primary factor in the development of insulin resistance, so losing lots of weight can reduce this bad fat.

        I've never looked back!
