I have made very pleasing A3 prints from a 2.7MP compact camera.
Cropping hard can work very well if done carefully. And today we have tools that can increase the quantity of pixels while adding detail, even if it's artificially generated.

Anyone who claims that it's not possible has just not moved on in the last 20 years. i've cropped and sold many pictures for publication from my old E-500 8mp Olympus DSLR and my biggest selling picture is from my wife's old E-6204/3 Kit E510, E30 + 35macro, 11-22, 14-45 (x2), 14-54, 40-150 (both types), 70-300,
m 4/3 EM1MkII + 60 macro, 12-100 Pro, 100-400
FL20, FL36 x2 , FL50, cactus slaves etc.
The Boss (Mrs Shenstone) E620, EM10-II, 14-41Ez, 40-150R, 9 cap and whatever she can nick from me when she wants it

His video is worth a look for the Sooty Shearwater shots he got!
I nearly always crop maybe even just a little but when you can get a bird filling the frame it can be stunning with feather detail.
When I went on a photo workshop years ago with my EM-1 and 90-250mm I showed the pro photographer running it a Barn Owl shot I’d got on one of the days and it was a bit too far over in the frame. He said, “well, why wouldn’t you just crop that to reframe it”. So I was ok with cropping stuff from then on. I haven’t printed anything for a while though, occasionally I do a calendar via one of the online sites and they always look fine.
