Why the 12-45 rather than the 12-40?

Used, it’s not even cheaper than the 12-40 at present. I bought a used 12-40 recently for £320 and it’s mint and so far as I can see absolutely perfect optically. It was unboxed but at that price it’s hard to complain. If the 12-45, used, were around the £250 mark I think it would be a better proposition - but given the size difference isn’t that much, losing a stop and paying more doesn’t really make sense.

Point being I don't want a 12-40, its too big and heavy in my opinion to stick on the front of my GX9
In hindsight maybe should have kept the 12-35/2.8, but even that's bigger than the 12-45
Not all about the money, I could buy a bigger higher end car for less than my smaller one cost, but it wouldn't fit under the car port.

That's a fair point Tram. Sometimes small differences in size on paper seem to matter more in real life. I did watch a review of the 12-45 (by Robin Wong IIRC) and he did make the point that the 12-45 feels feel notably lighter and smaller).

Want a smaller lighter zoom for travel especially cities when things get a bit more normal again.
Had a 12-40 before and it's a fairly substantial lens plus I like trying new kit.

      Hi Tram

Found one for you with 12 month warranty. Doesn’t mention box or the default wrapping cloth (CS-53) Never heard of a wrapping cloth before until I checked what the lens came with on the Olympus site.
      All the gear no idea

Thanks I saw that, no box so presumably split from a kit.
A shop in Swindon , GW Cameras has got new ones also split from a kit for £429.
Hdew have got new Grey imports for £429, so many choices.

I, too, would pick the 12-45 over the 12-40mm.

I found the 12-40mm is too large on an E-M5/10 sized body. Also, for what is effectively a travel lens, f2.8 is unnecessary. At the same time, if I want to do portraits, I find f/2.8 is not good enough. So I would rather take a smaller zoom lens and a single prime.

I think (perceived) compactness and lightness must be very subjective qualities. People coming from full frame or APS-C systems, or indeed from Four Thirds, probably think all our lenses are wonderfully tiny, and the way we sometimes reject tiny for tinier might seem mystifying to them. :-)

My first foray beyond the kit lens with my E-M5ii (my first ever proper digital camera apart from point and shoot) was a Four Thirds 12-60mm with MMF-3 adapter. Nicer to use this on an E-M1, but it felt perfectly okay to me at the time on the E-M5 ii.

If you travel a lot, and during normal times I'm away for several months every year, that extra weight starts to get to you fast. And also the size of the camera, the constant action of pulling it out of the bag and putting it back in gets to you. A few weeks into the trip you start to dread taking that camera with you.

It's a real pity that the 14-45 EZ doesn't go to 12mm (and that its not just a little bit sharper). That would make a great travel lens with, say, an EM5 or an EM10.

I never really worried about the difference at the wide end. I very happily used the 14-42mm EZ on the E-M10 and 10ii for ages. I always thought it was a very capable all rounder.
I scratched the itch and got the 12-40 PRO last year and tbh even though it's a lot bigger and heavier it's a substantial improvement - enough to effectively replace the EZ.
Not sure when I last took the EZ out in preference - though the EZ on the camera and 17mm f1.8 in my jacket pocket is the ultimate lightweight option.

Yes, and when you travel, 14mm and 12mm is often the difference between not having to carry another wide angle lens.

I have tried every m4/3 standard zoom lens except for 12-200mm. IMO, the closest competitor to the 12-45mm is actually the Panasonic 14-140mm II.

Compare unlimited number of cameras with lenses, see how compact or bulky a camera is and sort by height, width, depth and weight.

One is wider, the other has longer reach.

For the most part, I rarely find 12mm to be wide enough, either. So I carry a wide angle lens anyway.

Why not just do a 2 shot join with a 14 or 18? It will definately be wider than a 12.

This is an interesting comparison - definitely a place for all three. The 12-45 is notably lighter & smaller than the 12-40, so I take back my previous comment about it being similar!

That is the sort of difference I hoped to see, something akin to the Fuji 18-55 lens size and weight wise.
I used the 12-40 on my GX9 for a couple of European city type holidays, did find it a bit on the large side at times though.

Please don't forget that Lumix 12-35 which is only 51g heavier and 3.8mm longer but a constant f2.8. when coupled with the 35-100/2.8, it beats the need to carry extra filters as they both share the same 58mm thread.

I sold mine recently and the 35-100 too, seemed to have the 12-100 attached most of the time.
Main problem I found with the 12-35 was it not being long enough, no complaints with the lens itself though.

I like the 35-100/2.8 but, like Tram, I now find myself using the 12-100/4 more often.

Each to their own. I sold that 12-100.

My travel kit now are the 8fe,12-40, 35-100 and 100-300.

Its the day of reckoning, should hopefully be here today, think Amazon must have had problems this week.
Bought a few unrelated things and regardless where they came from all said Thursday for delivery.

I agree, a 12-45mm EZ would have been much better. Having the 9-18mm in your pocket to go with the 12-45mm EZ would cover the ground (and a bit more), but I feel the 9-18mm is a bit overpriced and would like to see the roadmap 8-25mm F4 PRO which will be pricier but may be better value for money.

It certainly does John, trying to think of a way to show it to scale.
Had to go out to the bank in Ely earlier on, but back now so will try and get something sorted to show on here.
