All PMs replied to. Both lenses are now sold. (says G incredulously)

To mike_j: How much did that lens go for on eBay?! Jings! That'll teach the bidders not to frequent the for-sale section of our Olympus UK E-System User Group more often.

Was the 'buy it now' in the UK? If not you are liable for VAT, customs and shipping agent fees, adds up to at least 25% on the purchase price. From HK and Far East you sometimes may not be charged, from the US and Canada I always have been.

I bought a Nikon Coolpix from the US a few years ago, ended up costing me more than it would have done in the UK and the 3 year warranty turned out to be useless when the camera packed up after a year or so.

Edit: Sorry, just noticed you are in Ireland, maybe your Customs are not quite so avaricious, though in priciple my comment applies to all EU countries.

it was actually somewhere in the far east, south korea maybe, naturally they offered to mark it as a gift on the customs form, I had wondered how well that works.

@ Graham - How come you sold the lenses? Are you upgrading to the top pro glass or switching brands?

A gift... The customs will just have a field day laughing. It doesn't matter if you are getting a genuine gift for your 100'th birthday, able to prove it being so. "The law is the law" is the dish of the day for authoritarian people in the system, and regardless of you getting a birthday present, or welcome back to life present after cancer treatment or whatever else, the goods would still be regarded as an import, and import taxes/duties have to be paid.

For normal people who do not import anything on regular basis, it sounds logical that a gift should be excempt from taxes, but I have been in a genuine situation (Denmark), where a friend of mine had sent me a leather jacket for birthday (from Indonesia). When I arrived to the postal office, the custom's worker opened the box with the jacket with a box cutter, and in the process the leather jacket was slashed. I was to pay full import taxes, duties, luxury tax and 25% value added tax on top of THEIR estimated street value of said jacket. I pointed out that this was a present, also pointed out that the price they were working with was based on their estimate, and not the documented price of the jacket, and finally I pointed out that the jacket had been destroyed when the packet was opened, and as such I should be paid damages.... and the response was that I could pay, or the package would be sent back to Indonesia, and my friend would have to pay for the return transport fee.

So I paid, and didn't have many kind thoughts or words to offer the person who was "doing his duty".

So... any offers of gift wrapping... won't stand a change if the letter of the law is applied. Be prepared to pay all duties, and be happy if things go through without added costs.

In reply to Paul (AKA Woofmix) about why I sold my lenses (and E-3 body last week):

As solid and as dependable as that camera and those lenses were, I found myself leaving them at home more often than not because carrying them was such a chore. So, I sold them with the view of buying something smaller and more portable. I've not quite made up my mind what to go for so I'm going to sit on the fence for now -- I've still got my fab E-1 and 50mm f2 macro lens to shoot with -- but the E-620 is in my shortlist along with one or other of the Micro Four Thirds cameras.

                        Regards,

                        Graeme

                          Graeme,

Please to hear that you would like to stay with Oly.

I am not up to the standard of a lot of the guys on here, but I am thoroughly enjoying my experience with the E-620 - I have posted some images here already and you are welcome to look at my Flickr account too.

I think if the E-620 is still too big, the m4/3rd are excellent also.

                          Regards

                            Hi Graydon,

I'm encouraged to hear how much you're enjoying your E-620. I was instinctively drawn to your Flickr shots with the 9-18mm lens as that combination would be just about perfect for me (the G1/EP-1 + Lumix 7-14mm is another contender, but a little[!] more expensive). Of course, I could just content myself with my E-1 and maybe buy a decent film scanner so that I can resurrect my OM-1n; I've got loads of FP4+, PAN F and Technical Pan to use up. Decisions, decisions...

                            Good shooting,

                            Graeme
