  • Deliberations & Possible Sale of upto 3 Olympus & OM Cameras.

Dear friends of the Olympus UK E System User Group, Update : All items now either sold to contributors on the site or to be traded into my local high street camera store tomorrow in exchange for for two new OM-1 Mk2’s. Thank you for your interest and patience.

I have been a member of the site for some years now and made a number of contributions but thus far none of these have seen me reaching out to enquire if any of the UK members and in particularly those living in the North West of England might be interested in buying some of my Olympus cameras, so hopefully you will indulge me on this occasion?

I currently use the OM1 with, when required, the HLD 10 grip. The shutter count is 9705. I purchased the camera and the grip at launch from LCE in Manchester.

My wife is developing a keener interest in photography and she currently uses my earlier OMD EM—1 Mk 3 with, or without, the HLD 9 grip. The shutter count on this camera is 15,200. We purchased this camera at launch from WEX Manchester because they were able to offer us a decent trade in deal on the majority of my original four thirds equipment and my wife’s original OMD EM5 on the day.

The HLD Grip is relatively new having been replaced free of charge by Olympus, when the battery cap door switch on the original one broke. Obtaining a replacement could not have been easier by the way and simply involved my speaking with the high street store from where the camera was bought. They were so confident that Olympus would accept responsibility that they immediately replaced it, stating that the company was a real pleasure to work with.

We also have a late edition OMD EM1 Mk2, which we purchased in October 2020, after we had acquired the more modern OMD EM1 Mk 3. This camera was a direct replacement for my original one and we bought it to take advantage of a lens offer Olympus were running at the time. The shutter count on this one is 3787.

Our purchasing decisions in relation to the MK3 and the replacement MK 2 were also heavily influenced by the possibility that the Olympus brand might completely disappear and we were seeking to ensure we would have cameras to use with our existing Olympus lenses for years to come. Had this not been the case, we would probably have awaited the the release of the OM-1 and the new sensor etc,

All of the above commentary is provided by way of background and to show that we are not serial camera flippers but amateur enthusiasts who are happy with our choice of camera manufacturer.

All three cameras are in excellent condition and we have all the original packaging and accessories.

All three camera were immediately registered on the Olympus / OM Web Site and if I look around I can find the original invoices to prove proof of ownership.

In recent months my wife has been borrowing my OM1 when we go out to try our hand at bird photography and she has concluded that she is at a disadvantage because her camera does not benefit from bird detection.

With the arrival of the OM3 my wife is considering a change and having popped along to the local WEX store last week for the OM3 hands on event she really liked the camera and notwithstanding the fact the OM3 is a smaller camera then the Mk 3 she currently uses, my wife is seriously considering a purchase.

Originally we thought that we might sell, or trade in, the Mk2 to partially fund the purchase of the OM3, but following a wider discussion we might take the opportunity to consolidate our camera equipment and perhaps trade in or sell both the Mk2 and the Mk3 and perhaps even the OM1 and purchase both the OM3 and an OM1 Mk2, thus ensuring that our cameras share the same sensor and essentially the same feature set. Much of this of course depends on the funds such a sale or trade in might realise.

With all the above in mind, I wonder if any of the members might be interested in any of the above items? If so, perhaps you can contact me?

Thank you all for taking time to read this post.

    Kindest regards,

    Steven.

Yes I agree an idea of a price is the best starting point plus photos , listing individually also helps . I’m browsing for a back up body at the moment so you never know

    Hello Folks,

Thank you to those members who have responded on the thread, or sent me a private message.

I apologise for not responding immediately but I was rather busy yesterday.

I have spent some time today thinking about what might be a reasonable price to ask for the cameras.

I think we can all agree that the shutter count on camera is low.

I have compared the trade in values to a range of retail prices for the same equipment on the WEX and LCE web sites and tried as best as can to concentrate on items which appear to be of the same condition.

In my opinion, all the items would be somewhere between 9 and 9+ on the Wex site.

Wex have looked at the equipment and rated it internally as :

    OM-1 9-
    OMD EM-1 MK3 9-
    OMD EM-1 MK2 9
    HLD -10 9
    HLD- 9 9+

Personally, I think the -9 ratings are a trifle harsh, I think they have downgraded the particular items from 9 or 9+ simply because on both the OM-1 and the OMD EM1 Mk2, I have used Think Tank Straps have rubbed the plastic moulding that cover the split pins.

The bodies are all free from marks, save for two minor points. On the OM1 on the base of the camera in the area immediately to the right of the outer edge of the flip screen to just before the base turns through ninety degrees to accommodate the grip, there are three minor paint rubbing. The first of these is no more than a few millimetres in length. The second extends across that portion of the bottom of camera base which sits under the trash bin button and the third is a few millimetres and is located on that part of the of the base plate which sits directly below the opening edge of the memory door. IPhone photo to follow. I don't think these have been caused by my using my battery grip, but rather by the alloy buckle of a Think Tank Slide Lite Strap, rubbing on the corner of the base, when it was quickly put into a camera bag. Normally, I remove the strap and the grip and and put each component in a dedicated padded area of the bag

On the OMD EM1 MK 3 the there is a very minor 3 x 1mm grey mark on the outer edge of the shinny plastic covered shoulder of the vertical hand grip, immediately to the right of the shutter button / front mode dial. This know was caused by the alloy buckle of a Think Tank Slide Lite Strap, because I know where I was when I did it ! Again IPhone photo to follow.

Basically, the Think Tank Slide Lite Strap are probably overkill for these cameras and are best removed before placing the camera in the bag.

If there is real and serious interest I am happy to spent time over the weekend taking more images, but for the moment, I will leave it to the above two, plus the 21 images below, which show each face of the camers and a view of the rear screen.

As far as I know there are no scratches on the sensor and they appear clean. Wex certainly made no mention of anything untoward in this regard.

    As to price expectations?
I have tried to adopt a realistic approach. I have had regard to the trade in values and taken the mid point between the highest and lowest prices I could find for each camera in the used section of both WEX and the LCE for cameras which appear to have been graded as these have by WEX.

(Having said this, reading a number of the descriptions on the WEX Site, the condition of some of the cameras which are being advertised as being 9 and 9- appears worse then the ones we are considering selling but we are where we are)

I have then added 50% of this difference to the trade in price to arrive at a price which is approximately half way between the trade in price and the retail price of the used item. I hope this makes sense.

The above produces the following figures :

    OM-1 £825.00
    OMD EM1 MK3 £500.00
    OMD EM1 MK2 £335.00
    HLD 10 £175.00
    HLD 9 £40.00

I originally intended to upload all the images with this mail but there are 31 of them and the site limit is 10, so thats a no go.

I will therefore upload 5 additional replies. One each for each camera and one each for each of the two gips. If all goes well they are arranged as OM1 / OMD EM-1 MK 3 / OLD EM1 MK2, followed by the HLD 10 and HLD9.

Thanks for spending time reading all of the above.

    Best,

    Steven

                    Hi Steven
I'm interested in the Mkiii, the only problem being that I would have to ask you to hold on to the camera until I can find someone who is coming out to Cyprus and is willing to bring it with them, or who lives/works in the EU and is willing to take delivery when they are in the UK and post it to Cyprus when back in the EU.
VAT and customs charges applied when arriving here direct from the UK by post or courier make second-hand purchases uneconomic - a really frustrating consequence of Brexit.
