  • are messy backgrounds a problem

not with the OM1 and 300mm f4 there not . I have several shots in this burst all with various degrees of really messy backgrounds and all have retained focus on the prime target the fast moving black tern while totally ignoring the changing messy backgrounds that included trees, bushes, buildings ,lampposts and people .. I can post more shots if needed but I have to admit that while the subject is to far away for a decent picture the target separation leaves me very pleased

Impressive subject recognition and tracking. Have you now updated your firmware to v1.7 and if so do you feel it is better?

What C-AF sensitivity number do you use? Assume that a negative figure makes the focus less likely to wander...

I normally use +1, so it will respond quicker...

I believe I have recently re.set it to +2 mark ..but with the OM bodies it seems irrelevant compared to previous models, must be around 50 shots in this burst and they have all stuck on the bird like glue once acquired ,,a few initial shots failed to lock on .. and taking into consideration I wasn’t at my best either health wise I can’t knock the results

Nice demonstration of the AF. What cluster of focus points do you use Jeff?

Most of my BIF problems stem from having changed my 1/2 function lever switch so it is using my S-AF setup for static birds. That results in one sharp shot and the rest of the burst being OOF. Pilot error as usual!

The first and third are OK and can add to the image context, but the middle one doesn't work for me.

its just a small selection of cropped shots Ian to show the background is not effecting the target once locked on . I wouldn't normally use them . just done a count and there's actually 58 shots in the burst all with the bird in focus against varying backgrounds

Ah - sorry for the misinterpretation, Jeff - I thought it was about framing and composition
Working...
