  • and another major problem

I have to admit im a big apple fan boy ( a o.a.p one) having a i.phone ,i.pad and Mac mini each has there use for me the phone for out and about and WhatsApp etc , the Mac mini for processing photos and other general stuff .. but my i.pad is virtually with me most of the time at home for u.tube , films ,apple t.v and I can leave the wife in peace as I watch my stuff with headphones .. etc ..so imagine my horror last night when I had just processed that first red kite image picked up the i.pad to show her before going to bed ,and it was totally dead to the world no re.set no power just totally bricked ..
so unfortunately it was a trip into Chester and to curry's superstore this morning to buy a new one ,luckily they are reduced at the moment but it was still a big ouch ... waiting for my lad to get home from work and set it properly for me , then I have to find all my apps and forums etc and set them all up .. not going to risk cocking it up myself 2 steps forward and 3 steps back grrrrrrrrrrr

Didn't you have all your settings, apps ..... etc. in "The cloud". You should be able to configure the new device easily.

If you backed up your old one, usually automatic, you can easily restore everything.

Oh dear, sorry to hear Jeff. I suppose dead and not frozen? I had a freeze and it was a matter of holding some buttons in until it restarted. I’ve not had one totally die yet, the old one was just too slow. Good luck with setting up the new one. I think I just logged into the Apple account and it found all the apps I’d got on the old one.

I have had 2 ipads die on me and I will never buy another overpriced Apple product. The first ipad sprung back into life after sitting on a radiator and warming up so I was then able to recover data. Once it cooled down it no longer worked. Shortly after that my wife's ipad stopped working so I just put it on a shelf, forgot about it, and bought a Galaxy tablet. About a month later when I opened the ipad out of curiosity, it was back working again, and it still is working. But I have no trust in Apple's planned redundancy system, and I keep it as a reminder never to indulge in Apple ever again. Years ago, Apple was the chosen equipment for those in graphic design, but those days are long gone. When my pc falters or needs upgrading it is a simple matter to open it up and replace the dodgy component. Not quite the samewith an Apple thing.
      Rant over.

The average life of an iPad battery is apparently an average of around 3yrs. The same seems to apply to most appliances with rechargeable fixed battery packs.. As most are able to run on power it may not be a total loss. However, many batteries now are no longer user replaceable and when this is the case the battery is only available as a non original and not an easy job to replace. This of course limits the lifetime of the item it powers. My laptop and slate batteries usually last 4 or more yrs, none have been user replaceable. If the item gets unusually hot, the battery is the main culprit. Leaving it connected and using power risks swelling of the battery case and in rare cases fire. I have a Lenovo laptop rendered more or less useless by a battery swelling twice its size and cracking the plastic base where most of the electronics are secured. The battery is located towards the rear of the laptop and has also damaged/cracked the lid hinges. If your appliance can run with the battery disconnected, it can still quite happily carry on being used on power with no worries but obviously no longer portable. I have a 3 year old Motorola phone that now has a battery life of around a day. The battery is secured by some sort of resin that needs a powerful special liquid acid to remove it. If I can find out if giving the battery a "snip" will still allow the phone to be used, I can buy a cheap power bank. Again, leaving the battery connected comes with risks.

The manufactures of these various appliances seem totally indifferent to battery problems stating the batteries supplied should last the anticipated useful life of their product. Sadly I am one of the "Old School" who, when paying a fair amount of cash for a product expect it to last at least as long as me. 😁

Although battery life never seems to last as long as I’d like on any device I’ve owned, I’ve luckily never found anything to completely die unexpectedly (actually I lie, it happened to one laptop once, but was a motherboard failure).

Generally I find they’ll last long enough that seeking more modern performance specs are what drove an upgrade rather than diminishing device performance.

I gave up my original iPad 12.9 pro after it kept getting hot and had a huge white spot on the display
I now use this Samsung TabS6 a few years old now and never missed a beat
Also my mobile is the venerable Google Pixel 5 now about 4 years old

As you can tell I am no Apple fan boy!
