  • Is it worth a play

Just been looking through Facebook as currently immobilised with a bad back ,, and spotted the cheap Chinese manual focus lenses . They come in all sorts of lengths and prices but one I spotted gave up to 800mm at F8 MF obviously , mostly sub £100 quid . Just wondered if anyone has tried one as that would give 1600mm of reach for us .. might have a browse through Flickr later see if any results show up .
The other option is a mirror lens again MF only but that’s no problem ,but new or used and which makes work best think it’s been mentioned before ? Or do I just fit the camera to my spotting scope got the correct lens and adaptor for it ?

Not for me. But I guess it’s a way of dealing with boredom!

There was a bit of discussion about mirror lenses a while back. It was during peak lockdown so it was an interesting little project to find and try out my old Oly OM system 500mm f/8 that I used occasionally for cricket. I got some examples of classic "doughnut bokeh" and put them in a thread:

There has been discussion on a couple of recent threads about the bokeh produced by mirror lenses. Usually when this subject comes up it is almost immediately followed by the word "doughnut" - the design of the lens, with a concentrator mirror in the middle of the front element, makes out of focus points show up as

I think it is one of those things that can occasionally look good and occasionally hideous, and even the good examples will start to look hidrous if you do it too often!

Just go for the scope option, especially if you have the adaptors already.
