  • Bird recognition...

The EM1X was previously thought to be too good for my wants and needs. Now this new updated firmware includes the bird focus app, I am thinking again.............

The EM1 iii is a brilliant camera, the bird app would perfect it.............:-)

Same here Mark. If you watch this video by Mathieu Gasquet he reviews the bird detection subject AF on the EM1X in some detail from about 08:35 in. He concludes that for bird flight shots a C-AF 5x5 area still gives him better accuracy than the bird detection, which I found interesting. So it depends if you want it for static birds or flight shots. It would be great if the EM1Mk3 could be updated for any sort of animal detection AF. You can also watch the whole video and be tempted by that big lens he reviews!

Here is a screenshot of his concluding result on fight AF

It won't happen, not with the Mkiii's single processor, the M1X has two, in case you'd forgotten

I might have to disagree with you there!

The 2 processors in the X are the 8, the processor in the iii is the 9 and it was stated at launch that it was more than twice as powerful than the 8....

So I think a slightly compromised version may be a possibility, given a bit of time.

What's not clear from the review is whether the MKii or MKiii perform as well as the X with this lens... does the sync IS work with all three bodies or only the X?

I think performance and stabilisation wise if the MKii holds it's own, I may leave a body upgrade for some time!

Although I keep hankering after the starry sky af and the HHHR modes of the mk3 I think like you I might just wait a while before upgrading if at all. Who knows maybe there will be a mk4 with a bigger and better evf out by the time I get round to it!

I am not seeing anything in that video which justifies the price of the 150-400mm lens. I would expect close to perfection but it seems to be quite a long way off that.

I think the comparison with the Canon 800mm lens and full frame was interesting. The difference is no greater than expected and in some cases less than expected.

A direct comparison with the 100-400 would be very interesting.

As far as I can see the difference is f4.5 and the stabilisation.

I haven’t made my mind up, but am awaiting to try both lenses and different bodies together. Or seeing a proper comparison.

TBH with the results I’m getting with the mkii and 100-400 lately I really can’t justify a new body or lens
