  • Olympus UK Online Shop only taking payment by PayPal

I just looked at the Olympus shop to see if they still have the new 100-400mm lens in stock (it was shown as available yesterday).

They have a message saying “Payment: Until further notice we can only process payment by Paypal”

I don’t know why they would do that as in the UK you get better consumer rights and protection using a credit card, they must be having some sort of payment processing issue.

So lens purchase scuppered on two counts! I normally use the Oly store for new items as there are discount codes some of the Olympus visionaries give out in their newsletters which gives some reduction on newly released kit that isn’t normally available elsewhere.

Sometimes it is better to consider a new lens purchase for a few weeks anyway - that Rouse guy got me tempted on the new lens though!

Mark mentioned there was a payment issue at today's meeting - I believe a german payment company that Olympus use went bust. I don't know if that would affect the UK.

The problem I have already owning the PL version , are the few advantages enough to warrant changing ,yes rave reviews but have any of them used both .lenses ...I am sat on the fence teetering towards the new one but not 100% sure .

There’s also a top secret announcement from sigma due today Thursday ,let’s see what that is and I& it impacts us

I see where you are coming from. Are the PL TC’s compatible with the PL 100-400? All my lenses are Olympus including both TC’s so PL wouldn’t be a logical move for myself. The thought of equiv 1600mm full frame lens seems crazy and nice option to have in the bag as when needed.

There is a direct comparison of the two lenses on https://mirrorlesscomparison.com/

I get a newsletter from David Tipling - he gives out a 10% off voucher code for the Olympus store, I haven’t checked if it is still valid. Olympus were also giving one on some of their Facebook events during lockdown (is it over?). I used one when I bought a MkIII kit, it is worth looking out for them.

You can pay using a credit card via PayPal without needing a PayPal account. I would imagine that gives you the same protection wouldn't it?

I wouldn't rely on that - you'd need to read the terms very carefully.
I used to use a different payment intermediary until I discovered my credit card company considered I was buying "virtual currency" and then the payment company was turning that back into £. As far as the CC company was concerned the consumer protection only applied to the first part of the transaction and any goods were not covered by their normal protections.
