I have always enjoyed Wrotniak's posts and found them useful. I haven't looked at his blog for quite a while so this is a timely reminder.

I too enjoy the dry, no-nonsense sense of humour.

But what I get most out of from his blog are the lens comparisons whereby he photographs the same scene with three zoom lenses, with at least the same aperture settings of f11 and f8, plus wider, f6/f5.6 and often f4 and each at 3 different zooms.

As I am still learning the basics, then this reference set of lens to lens and setting to setting comparisons allows me to understand what specific lenses are good at and what they're not, what the effects are of particular settings and so when I should be using or not using particular lenses.

It is good that other reviews show a variety of examples of what a specific lens can delivery, but I do wish there were more of these direct comparison reviews showing what each lens delivers when photographing a known standard subject using, where possible, standard settings. I learn more of the basics from direct comparisons like these.

And straying off-topic, here's a side by side comparison of the 17mm, 25mm and 45mm Pro Primes together with the 75mm prime.

Although you end up with a lot of the same images, I find there is a lot to be learned by understanding what the differences are and what it is about the lens that creates those differences.

No, they're very different, and as I said I was straying off topic. But I wanted to amplify what I thought was an extremely useful feature of Andrzej Wrotniak's site; the reference set of the same image taken with different lenses and settings, by including the sulasula site where the four prime lenses were similarly compared.

But going back to the thread, I particularly like this comment:

"For crying out loud, these already have their own Mode Dial slot, where they sit quiet until needed (if ever); why bringing them into the middle of image adjustment parameters?"

Many years ago I used to think that Amateur Photographer had a boat of their own anchored on the Thames to use for all their camera and lens comparisons.
I've become slightly more intelligent since then, I think.

I don't think it was their boat, wasn't it HMS Belfast? It's still there near Tower Bridge. AP dumbed down a lot since those days. One darkroom product they tested a few years back praised its tough steel case. The case was tough, but it was plastic!
