  • something missing

I use my camera/s virtually daily and get 80% of the time satisfactory results , but I have to admit that something is missing and I cant put my finger on it . Olympus RAW files tend to be very vibrant which is fine in most circumstances but not all, its possibly reach as I used to use a 150-600 with or without t.c on a 1.5 crop sensor which gave 900mm or 1260mm effective reach I'm now limited to 800mm effective on a smaller sensor .. I know the limitations and I cant switch back to the longer heavier gear due to health anyway but its frustrating at times .

another problem I'm noticing is when shooting the owls which tend to fly low is the A/F in multi point tends to jump around from point to point ,great against a clear sky but not against a messy background ,might just switch back to single point a/f ... this is not so much a moan as a heads up to other wildlife shooters .

going to run through my menu in a bit In case its down to user error (highly probable ) if I find anything I'll update later

There are settings on the EM1mk2 specifically designed to help to track a moving target against a messy background.

In the Cogwheel - A1 menu

You can adjust AF Scanner to set how frequently it updates
and also the C-AF Sensitivity to lock sensitivity depending on the movement of your subject.

I remember there was quite a few posts on here a while ago by the BIF experts about which settings worked best.

think mine are set about right Dave .. its more to do with this particular place Dave , your shooting from a slightly elevated position . plus the birds are hugging the ground ,its a salt marsh with loads of odd bits sticking up everywhere , and to top it all your most of the time shooting directly into a low winter sun .. it defeats most camera systems not just olympus . I might try spot metering next time to see if that helps will add a pic in here in a bit to illustrate

and this is on a fairly clean bit of marsh

update on this . I went out yesterday and due to the cold weather I took a few shots and then sat back in the car chimping them ... straight away I noticed something that I haven't before the shots where the focus points were on the eye were soft and where it was on the back or breast of the bird the eye was sharp ... straight away my mind said micro adjust problems .. I did some initial tests on my m/a card with mixed results then came across a post that said the Panasonic 100-400 usually needs a M/A of -2 .. did this last night and taken a few test shots this morning .. and its like chalk and cheese .. the discard rate due to OOF images has reached near zero . it still needs more field testing but at the moment I'm very pleased with the results . more to follow after further testing

          Positive result.

The focus point can be seen in camera, image review.....but I'm sure you knew that.

yes Dave that's how I was checking , plus this time I have double checked them against the downloaded images on the Mac . please note the problem is only with this panasonic lens not the olympus ones
