  • What have I missed?

Why are Olympus pushing their little LS-P1 and LS-P4 audio recorders to work with the camera for video work?

Doesn't a reasonable quality microphone plugged straight into the camera do the same job?

The camera chops videos up into chunks so what does the sound recorder do? One big file that you then need to stitch to the video file?

A decent digital audio recorder will record a higher quality signal. You also have a lot more control over the recording settings compared to a camera.

Up market, including some Panasonic GH models, recorders can support time codes synchronised with digital sound recorders.
