Many years ago, my first 'proper' camera was a Zeiss Ikon Contaflex. I did, well, ok with it; but then I swapped it for a Pentax S1, and found myself doing far better. It really suited me. Felt 'right in the hand', right weight, right size. Many years later, I bought a Practika TL; nice camera, but not half so comfortable, and I couldn't do as well.
interestingly, I found the same effect with firstly comparing the PL3 with the PL7; and now my previous M5 with my M1. I felt completely at home with the M1 from day 1. I had never felt like that with the M5; indeed, having swapped my heavy Canon 50D kit for an M5 kit, not only was it a huge contrast, but I never quite got to grips with the M5 like i had with the 50D. Now, I'm back in my comfort zone with theM1, and my results are improving again.
I think this is quite an issue. If you have to think about the camera, you aren't thinking about the picture, and inevitably the picture suffers. I see this with a friend; she is obsessed with her Canon bodies and lenses (a lens for every subject!) and when we were comparing results a few days ago from shared trip, she couldn't believe that she had missed subjects that I spotted.
Strange how the camera can influence how well we perform. I wonder if other photographers experience this?
