Thanks for your response. I'm clear about the functionality of subject detection. My problem refers to subject selection. I have it set to a custom button. When I activate the selection button with bird detection activate, the focusing frame ON 2 jumps from bird to bird. I just don't know how to fix the frame to the bird of my choice.
As i said in my initial posting, I am unable to navigate to the chapter dealing with subject selection because of a lack of an index in the manual.
I hope that my cry for help doesn't fall on deaf ears
I have set the subject selection function onto the AF-ON button (using the button function item in the Operations sub-menu (the one with the cog). When I have bird subject detection on, if there are multiple subjects in the frame pressing the AF-ON button (to activate the subject selection) it will lock onto the subject currently with the bold frame. To select a different subject, hold the AF-ON button and use the front dial to move through the subjects. I have never used this in anger, just played with it with a painting with multiple birds on it.
Look at Subject Selection Lock on page 121. of the manual.
