    The video gives an excellent explanation of how astro photographs are done.

    The technique also applies to us mere mortals on the ground.
    Software such as Pixinsight or Astro Pixel Processor enables you to stretch and combine multiple images taken using a standard DSLR. You can also align and combine images taken in a mosaic to cover a larger area of sky.
    There are many astro-specific cameras available that use cooled monochrome sensors and allow you to add narrow-band filters similar to what Hubble does.
    It's a challenging and enjoyable hobby that can drain your wallet if you get the bug.
