  • Am I on the slippery slope

After over 10 years of loving Olympus/OM! I’ve become a bit despondent with my night shots, I’ve been getting more and more hot pixels, Even when i remap them.
So, I’ve just got a full frame canon R8 with a 16mm 2.8 only for milkyway stuff.
I’m hoping that my intentions stick and only use it for that, as I’m shocked how expensive full frame lenses are - even third party.
I know a few of you other kit as well as Oly, please reassure I’m not on the rock road 🤣

Ps! I’m actually looking forward to doing some comparison of my OM1 /em1 mkiii and the R8.

Horses for courses. It can be a bit of a pain running multiple systems, but it is also quite educational. I use non-Oly kit sometimes where I think it does a better job, but wouldn't want to switch over because for a lot of stuff the Olys are still the mutt's nuts. Since you have a quite clear and specific requirement which is better served by different kit it doesn't sound like a slippery slope, more like having a choice of pubs in the same street to get your beer in (other venues and beverages are available).

I think the answer is yes 🤣

The hot pixel issue is curious - has it got worse over time? What about the R8?

Ian, it does seem to have got worse in my recent attempts.even after just getting it serviced. I’ve resorted to noise reduction for on, which isn’t my default.
I accept a few hot pixels but it’s been crazy.
As soon as I get a comparison, I’ll post them but probably mid next week all being well
I’m yet to try the R8 as the moon has been impacting it. Hopefully next week,

I don't do much Astro these days, but rarely were hot pixels a problem when I did. Is it a sensor problem, unsure whether it would be fixable. Perhaps Warranty might come in to play. Might be worth a service...

      Good luck with the R8...

Currently I’m not sure if it’s the sensor or just me doing something different! Unfortunately my little grey cells have problems with certain things due to cognitive stuff but I’ve not had the problem until my attempts this year and I used a custom setting to try and ensure I don’t do silly things, but I did very little last year.
the fact it was serviced a week before my last attempt should mean the sensor was checked.
I’ve just tried taking images with lens cap on, I can’t see any on my tablet image, I put it into Lightroom, before I even make any adjustments, I can them there, but then they disappear.

I’ve got some landscape milkyway on my laptop at home and they really do show the hot pixels . I’ll upload one, once I get home early next week.

        cheers

no harm in using two systems I have recently got into to nikon DSLR stuff and there are some cracking bargains to be had at the moment as people switch to mirrorless
