  • DxO PureRaw 4 Review - looks good

I watched this review of DxO PureRaw 4 which is quite short

    Take aways :

    - New preview feature looks useful

    - The ability to control the denoising with new settings

    - Over-sharpening and halo issues possibly fixed in DeepPrimeXD2 mode

Has anyone upgraded? It is £69 same as last time...so like a £69 annual subscription...

I might update just for the preview feature, it saves time trying all the options on a problem noisy file.

It's definitely something I was thinking of Bill I would like to shoot at higher iso with my OMD EM1 MK3
But....I need to upgrade my computer first

Indeed you would probably have to upgrade your computer. DxO PureRAW is very processor hungry.

Yes, I upgraded yesterday. Look pretty good to me. The results are better than the PR 2 that I have been using for a couple of years. I skipped ver 3, as I saw now better results than ver 2...

I like the preview interface. You can set it to update the preview automatically when any changes are made.

I just can't figure out what the default settings were for the advanced sliders on the DeepPrimeXD2 mode now I've changed them - you really need to set per image or image batch I think.

You can dial up the Limunance setting (luminance noise I guess) until the noise just disappears to your taste in the preview. I can't see the Force details setting making much difference.

The Pure Raw 4 features sound really good. As a Photolab user however I’m frustrated that they’ve disconnected the Pure Raw upgrades from the Photolab feature set (which is was supposed to contain).

I'm in discussion with DXO at the moment on this but they are unwilling to discuss it so far.

This might be the feature set that moves me from Photolab to Pure Raw 4 as a plugin for another editing platform. can’t wait to hear more from others on whether the XD2 makes the change worthwhile. Thanks in advance.

Sorry. Bit of a rant. But so frustrating when you invest in a system and you get left behind.

No worries, a rant is always better out than in

Yes, it's frustrating they package this in both products with different release cycles.

If you watch this review by Peter Forsgard he suggests they might update PhotoLab with the new PureRaw features in the autumn as this is when the usually release updates to that (PureRaw seems to be in the Spring)

When DeepPrimeXD came out they put it in PhotoLab first then it was in PureRaw the following spring some months later, so the other way around. Just guessing but I reckon what is happening is they have a software team working on the core DeNoise engine software then new stuff for that gets released into a major product update to either PureRaw or PhotoLab according to whichever comes out first after that. Also another strategy is they can make sales of PureRaw while you wait for PhotoLab to be updated with it.

I got PureRaw because I can just pre-process the ORF files I want to DeNoise or apply lens corrections on then feed the DNG files into CaptureOne for my normal process. I didn't have to learn another package like PhotoLab.

There's also another review by this chap where he does some comparative tests and thinks the PureRaw has the edge with the new release. It might be worth a look to help decide on any changes:

Thanks for the words of sanity. It is just frustrating for them to be ‘connected’ offerings but on different release cycles. I think I’ll be investing in Pure Raw only going forward and integrating it into another workflow. Thanks again.
