  • Lightroom Denoise

Just upgraded to Lightroom Classic 12.3 and there is now a one touch 'DENOISE' button (presume it is new haven't noticed it before). Is this the end of Topaz Denoise?? Or is Topaz still better?

There is a fuller description and some interesting links on the Lightroom Queen website (a useful resource IMO):

It looks as though the new Denoise is the biggie (and presumably it will migrate into Photoshop soon as well), but there are a few other nice looking wrinkles as well.

I was wondering exactly the same about Topaz when I read about it.

I've had a play with it - it looks really quite good.
Good news is that it works on Olympus RAW files, bad news is that it doesn't work on JPGS.

This is a link to Anthony Morganti's preview of it:

I just tried it out on a few images. It works really well.

Compared to DxO PureRaw Plugin, sharpening is turned off.

For the woman, I used regular DeepPrime. DeepPrimeXD was a mess. It oversharpened and created lots of false details.
Notice the color of the clothes. LR did a much better job at recovering that.

On the building, DeepPrimeXD did a much better job at pulling details. LR lost a lot of texture.

I dialed in 60% noise reduction in LR.

I think she looks a bit scary like that however there was a lot of noise in the image - be good to see what is does on an image with not so much noise. I do do use Adobe products but if the noise reduction as very good it maybe the end of Topaz and DXO for me because paying for a large update each year can be off set again the Adobe costs- maybe. I have Topaz only because DXO was late to the party when the OM1 came out but will not update it any more DXO for me if better to use. Keep up the good work.

Possibly because the pic was taken at 20,000 ISO!! No-one would use that for portraits. Be interesting to see the same at say 1500 ISO.

Maybe, I just thing it looks oversmoothed and the DeepPrime version looks better

I've not yet looked at this - though invested in Topaz AIapps - it looks interesting. Will be interested to see if it's fast and how its performance may or may not benefit from GPU acceleration.

Someone reported to me that it takes about 4 minutes on a 12th gen CPU without GPU. It's taking about 15-30 secs for me with a laptop AMD 8core and nvidia rtx2060

Here's a couple at lower ISO. I missed focus slightly on the singer.
At lower ISO, I think I can use the "XD" DeepPrime.

I can't get the PureRaw 2 LR plug in to work on my LR6, it did on V2.0 then after the first update it didn't.
Just says this plug in is optimised for LR v9, spending more than ever on hardware and software these days to keep up.

after running just a handful of files through...I will say Lr's Denoise is really good.
I assume Lr's Denoise is only going to get better.

i need to 'play' a little more with Lr's sharpening which, in itself, says a lot because if "it" wasn't close then I would simply not concern myself with any of it and just continue on with Topaz PhotoAi.

i can say at this point that it certainly seems likely that I may solely use Lr/Ps and dispense with third party apps for denoise/sharpening.
that's a huge cost saving and time saver.

And to open an old debate ... all these updates come "for free" once you have a subscription!

I've thought for a while it was only a matter of time before Adobe got onto the "AI" NR bandwagon.

I figure my Topaz PhotoAI term is nearly at an end and iirc the renewal is $200 (latest I heard there was a sale price of -50$).
Not likely going to have to renew any Topaz apps any longer.
$10/month for Lr/Ps is very manageable for me.
Adobe may have just paid for itself (plus)…and put a severe financial hurt on third party apps.

Makes me wonder if the software developers that left topaz ,a year or so back have actually moved to Adobe .. if I remember correctly even the original owner left at the time . After that all the prices rocketed and then the extremely pricey imho Ai started up ..

I have tried it, but feel,it is a little slow....

My work through using Pure Raw, Lightroom and occasionally Topaz DeNoise works well for me, so I am a little reluctant to change a tried and tested method...............Old stick in the mud I know........................but if its not broke.............................:-)

Yes similar I'm used to the pureraw-LR workflow, plus pureraw is paid for so no point in not using it.

On a 24Mp raw file from the S5, it took about 9s on my Mac M1.

I’ve been trying it but it is really slow. Around 5 minutes
per image. My computer is fairly new. Intel i7 2.3 GHz, 16 GB Ram, 16 bit. Windows 11. When the image finally renders, it’s really good!

And yet it’s 9s on a Mac M1 Max. I suspect you need a fast graphics card to get decent performance on a WinTel PC.
