  • PhotoShop Elements 6 or E-30

    Hi everyone,

I have been using PSE 6 since I got my e-510 to process my RAW files with no problems at all. Now that I have upgraded to the e-30, the Bridge CS3 photo downloader opens up but is unable to display the preview of the .ORF. If i open the file, PSE 6 comes up but prompts an error and is unable to recognize the ORF. But if i set my camera to save in JPEG format, it can read the JPEGs.
Did i miss anything? with my camera setting perhaps or is there something i should change with PSE 6.
I tried opening the ORF with Olympus Master 2, they were all fine.
So i am thinking it must be the PSE 6?
Anybody with a previous experience such as this?
    Thanks
    Jude

PSE 6 is unable to deal with ORFs from the E-30. I'm afraid you'll either have to upgrade to PSE 8 or convert your Raw files to DNG format via the free Adobe converter.

Yes, I convert E620 files to DNG and then import into CS3, a similar scenario the the one described above. True, its an extra stage, but I don't detect any quality problems. You can set up the DNG software to convert all the files in one folder (your card reader) and place them in another folder (I use a temporary hard drive location).

I generally go make a cup of tea, when I come back the files are waiting for me...

      Edit and Postscript:

Actually I am quite impressed with the ACR route into CS3. It supports presets, and you can create these yourself. Your preset can save partial subsets of all the stuff that ACR knows about.

      So:

I made myself a set of presets which do a daylight colour balance correction calibrated for each of my cameras at each of my usual ISO settings. I saved these as E620_ISO100, E620_ISO200 etc.

Then I made a set of presets that correct any residual chromatic abberation and corner vignetting on my favourite lenses at their extreme ends. 14-54@14mm 11-22@11mm etc

Thus there are quite a few combinations available, and with two clicks in ACR I can polish each image before I import it. I will admit the CA corrections can be very minor, but every little helps
Look, I'm an old man. I shouldn't be expected to put up with this.

Wow, thanks for your help StephenL!
Just downloaded the converter! It's an extra step alright but definitely better than buying a new software and takes a little bit of "getting used to". All the while I thought I've ruined my camera or perhaps some virus got into my system.
        Cheers!
