  • Screen/print Calibrator X-Rite i1Display Studio

I have a Spyder 4 which is not supported by my Mac and have been looking at the X-Rite i1Display Studio. It will calibrate the screen, printer and projector I think.
Anyone use one of these and can recommend it?

    Hi Dave
Used to have Spyder 4 but like you found not compatible with latest MAC operating system. Now use Datacolor Spider X to profile computer screen and recently got the color checker passport pro to profile the camera. For the paper use profiles available from paper supplier.
Quite impressed with output of prints, although i am no expert

I use the older X-Rite ColorMunki Photo, now discontinued I think. Excellent product, works perfectly for screen and for printing. I have no doubt the replacement is good. (I used to have a Spyder long ago.)

I use the X-Rite i1Display Studio great bit of kit and has allowed me to calibrate all 3 monitors to make images look the same on each screen which Spyder always failed to do. Not tried to use the printer calibration yet but is on my to-do list as recently purchased an Epson Surecolor P800.
      All the best

I have been using the SpyderPrint to produce my own profiles for over 6 months now and am very pleased with the results. However, unless you are planning on using non-OEM inks, or specialst papers (watercolour etc) for which there are no readily available profiles, it is probably not worth while. It takes time, ink and paper to produce a good profile and can become an obsession if you are not careful.
I use Marrutt bulk inks and they produce free profiles for my printer and all my papers - most of which are supplied by them anyway, so there would be no incentive for me to spend a lot of time (and money) producing my own, except that where I live the postal delay to get a test print back to them can take 1 week in 'normal' times and as long as 2+ weeks now.
Having the ability to produce a new profile on the spot is a distinct advantage if I want to try a new paper, also I have a hankering to try the Paul Roark carbon printing method for which I will need to produce my own profiles, so in my circumstances it is worth the effort.

I use an X-rite Display i1 Pro just for screen calibration. It used to be a bit of a long-winded fiddle with my previous Dell 2470 screen, but I recently invested in an Eizo CS2420 and it takes just seconds to re calibrate (which means you are bothered to do it), and setting and switching between colour modes is dead easy.
          Regards,
