  • Duplicate files

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere about some software that could compare file names/sizes/dates.
I have photos that I have copied onto an external hard disk, and I have created a second copy on the same hard drive just so I didnt lose them...

But now I'm running out of disc space, and I want to make sure I have a full set of backups on my external drive, and a full set off-site, so rather than having duplicates here there and everywhere I want to make sure that everything is organised properly so I can find them when I want them... and I want to do it before I get too many photos...

So does anyone know of software that can locate duplicates, and does anyone have any advice for cataloguing my photos so I dont get into this mess again

    Many thanks

Its a shame that humans dont come with autofocus, like cameras do!

    Re: Duplicate files

This is a bit basic but if you copy everything from one part of the drive to the other, when Windows finds duplicates it will ask you if you want them overwritten. You reply no (and there may be an option to say no to all). You can then copy everything from the second part back to the first following the same process, giving you two complete sets. Of course if you have totally different folder structures in the two parts then it won't be quite as simple - but you might be able to do it folder by folder - it depends how you've organised things. It certainly won't work if you have different photos with the same name though.
