  • Quick Lightroom question

Just got a second drive to do 2nd copies for back up of the Lightroom folder.

Setting the import to save a second copy sorts the future, do I simply copy the existing folder across to the second drive or is there some other bits needed?

    Thanks all!

Good question. I had been asking myself the same thing but hadn't had time to do any research.

Make a backup of the LR catalogue as well. You will need this to reinstate everything as it was should it be required. You would be advised to repeat the process, ie copy of the files and the catalogue on a regular basis.

The Lightroom catalogue only points to (tracks) the folder(s) which are the image import destination (or else have been imported into Lightroom by your actions).

If your primary folder(s) go AWOL and you need to access images which are residing on your backup - or "2nd copy" folder, you will need to 'right click' on the folder(s) in the LR "Folders" panel and then choose "Update Folder Location" and navigate to your 2nd copy....

One of the reasons for backing up is to do with the hard drive (or equally SSD) of the computer going 'feeding glands' upwards. If you make a backup of both the current catalogue and the image files it will be much quicker to restore order.
