  • HELP! What software? (is today's deal good?)

    for me?

I would rather have one package that does all I need than keep switching packages. I also do not understand what, if any, additional plug-ins (ACR?) I might need (or the cost of these) to read my E-M5 ORFs and do the processing I would like to. Another thing that puts me off is all the different abbreviations that relate to the different packages as I have yet to learn what they all mean. Photoshop seem the worst - CS4,CS6,CC - whats the difference?

Help a post processing newbie, please.

In your position I would go for Elements, especially at Amazon's current price.

Presumably the version under offer (12) supports the E-M1, or will with a download?

For a FREE basic editor, that can do some useful batch processing, I use Faststone:

At the risk of answering a question without absolute certainty, yes. 12 is the latest version. Although at present E-M1 support is only preliminary. That is, they've not finalised it yet and it could be subject to some tweaking. But this version, used also in Lightroom, works well enough for me.

£34.99 for both programmes is a bargain. I paid more than that for Elements on its own.

Thanks to all (Stephen, Dave, Graham, Richard, Phill) for replies.

I checked out the image distortion tools (brief you tube tutorial) and wasn't that impressed as it just seemed to be camera up/down and left/right perspective correction (oh well, back to Olympus Viewer) but the price did seem reasonable for the other things it offered so I went ahead.

Most photographers don't need CS6 and for them, and me, Elements is fine. Just placed my order and free delivery.

I doubt one package will do it all especially if you use raw, for instance Lightroom 5 has more features for processing raw files than Elements which is quite cut down on it's ACR features which are quite basic. But then LR does not have some of the editing features that Elements has.

Only you can really decide which is more important to you if you only want to use one program, me I use a raw software for most of my work and a image editor for the 10% of images that may need further work that is not possible in the raw converter.

Strangely enough if you want all of that in one package the full ACR tools and bit pixel eding then it would have to be the very expensive CS6, but then you would not have the full dam cataloging features.
                      Regards Paul.
One day I hope to be the person my dogs think I am.

This is where my knowledge is a bit thin. The difference betweeen raw and non-raw processing seems a moveable boundary depending on which tools you use. On a basic level the raw processing should only be converting the raw data to a jpeg and then (optionally) applying the camera settings and lens correction data. There is probably more to it than this and I need a good tutorial.
