  • OSX Mavericks

I've recently upgraded my iMac to Mavericks which has been very successful and everything works much faster including LR5.3. However the Easyprint software for my Canon printer no longer works and Canon at present don't do drivers etc. for Mavericks. I can get round it by other means but the Easyprint is such a nice intuitive print set up system and I miss it. It annoys me that Canon, or any other manufacturer for that matter, can't get updated software ready for download quicker. I know I'm probably expecting too much but I'm the customer and I have a right to!

I'm in the process of moving over to a Mac, and have Canon printers. But I don't use the Easyprint software. I take it the printers will work normally on Mavericks?

I have a Canon iP5000 and a Canon Pro 9000, and both work with Mavericks, although I don't use Easyprint.

        Re: OSX Mavericks

I can't comment on the printer drivers as I don't use a printer at home but I recently upgraded to OS X Mavericks and was pleasantly surprised by how straightforward and hassle-free the process was (although it did take about 6 hours to download and install it.) It seems to run quite fast and the only problem I had was that I had to reformat my back up drive and re-do the back ups. I also lost my monitor calibration settings which is probably why my photos look so crap now.

The only thing I don't like is the pale grey background to the dock. I find it hard to see which applications are open as the white dots don't stand out enough. I am surprised that you can't customise the background colour.

Yes I quite like it and I only use the Easyprint because I often produce small sizes for cards, ID photos etc. and it does the job nicely for those. Printing is fine without the Easyprint though. I haven't checked my calibration settings, I will do that when I have time. As far as I know my backup hard drives still work ok but that its another thing to check, thanks.

I'm another who upgraded to OSX Mavericks, so I could install Aperture 3.5.

Totally frustrated as this was an OSX Server system, now Apple want £13 for the server app and btw VPN no longer works…..

              Re: OSX Mavericks

As a new Mac user - 2 years and struggling - I found this helpful.

Mac Basics - Change your desktop

Your desktop picture is the most high-profile item on your computer. So why not showcase your individuality by changing the default desktop settings?
Your Mac comes equipped with more than the default picture.

To change your desktop picture, follow these instructions:

You'll find pre-installed desktop images in Desktop & Screen Saver preferences.

From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences to open the System Preferences window.

Click the Desktop & Screen Saver button.

Click the Desktop tab; the left pane lists the different folders from which you can choose an image. The right pane displays thumbnails, small images, of the images in the selected folder.

Click Apple Images to select it. You'll see the default picture in the right pane, along with a bunch of other images.

Click any thumbnail to instantly change the desktop image. Feel free to click a few different ones to try them out.

Now select Nature in the left pane. Then click any of its thumbnails to place a nature type picture on your desktop. Do the same for Abstract.

If you'd rather have a solid colour desktop, select Solid Colours in the left pane, and select a colour swatch from the right pane.

When satisfied with your choice, close the Preferences window.

You may, if preferred, turn any of your own photos or artwork into a desktop picture.

              To do this:
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.

In the window, click Desktop & Screen Saver, then click the Desktop tab to display just the desktop preferences.

If you want to use a photo from your iPhoto Library, select Library in the left pane.

Otherwise, select Choose Folder, navigate to and select the folder that contains your image, and click Choose.

In the right pane, click any thumbnail to place the image on the desktop.

Depending on the size of your chosen image, you can opt to tile or centre it if it's small. Note: Your image will look pixelated or have jagged edges if it's too small.
Or have the image fill the screen, or stretch to fill the screen. Just choose an item from the pop-up menu that appears above the thumbnails, the one next to the thumbnail of your current picture.

If an image is too small to display satisfactorily as a full screen image, you can choose Tile from the pop-up menu.

You can also have your Mac automatically change your desktop picture.

              To do this:
Select the "Change picture" checkbox. Note: This option is not available if you selected your iPhoto Library or an iPhoto picture roll.

From the Change picture pop-up menu, choose one of the intervals listed in the menu (such as every minute or every day—or choose every 5 seconds for a desktop slideshow).

Select the "Random order" checkbox if you want the images to appear at random. If it isn't selected, your images will appear in alphabetical order by name.

Hope this helps prevent hair loss?
It's not what inspires us that is important, it's where the journey takes us.

                Re: OSX Mavericks

An annoying problem is the Epson Scanner program does not work, Epson have been reported saying that it will take some months to fix the problem (probably a rewrite), however a program called Vuescan does work with Epson Scanners.

Also I think there is a problem with the TWAIN interface in that in the past Photoshop used to be able to impart images from the Epson scanner, now I find that I have to copy and paste the image from the Image Capture like panel. Similar problem with Pixelmator.

Apart from that things are working OK - so far.

I have seen a rumour that there will be a new version of Aperture in December, so stay tuned.

                  Re: OSX Mavericks

That's interesting. According to the Epson support site, my scanner (the V500) is fully supported under Mavericks. I've not got my iMac yet (expected today) so I can't try it - unless I link it up to my macbook.

I experienced the problem with Epson and also read of other people complaining about it on the Apple discussion forum.

However just looked at the Epson Download page and it offered me a new driver - so I will see what it does and report back.

and the new driver works - so a problem removed.

Also the scanner now works in Photoshop as well - so no problems at the moment.

Thanks for testing this for me, Derek!

The new iMac has just arrived, and it's busy transferring files from my PC. Looks like it will be a while! Good job we're going out tonight.

I haven't tried printing but I did "lose" the last two years worth of e-mails! A patch has been issued now, but if anyone uses Gmail and sees an ARCHIVE folder that looks like a duplicate of all your mail folders, don't delete it! I did and without any warning that I was deleting all my mails they were gone! And from the Gmail server too! A trip to the Genius Bar last Friday were an expert recovered them from my back up!
