While I was in a bird hide today I got into a conversation with a chap with a 7D plus 600mm plus 1.4 converter. As we were attempting to take photos of a small bird some distance away the conversation including the necessity to crop images of small subjects. He stated that he never cropped but "compressed" to preserve pixels. Now I know about resampling but that is not compressing. Has anybody any idea what he was talking about?
Not possible, I think he probably chooses the option in in the 7 D to use a sensor crop which in the Raw format is • 5184 x 3456• 3888 x 2592• 2592 x 1728.
It is still cropping giving a narrower angle of view, just that it is at the sensor level rather than post cropping but by no stretch of the imagination can it be called compressing.

The only thing I can think of would be saving TIFF files using the loss-less compression option. Of course this doesn't crop the image.

Having shot for publication for 30+ years I very rarely crop and when I do it's never more than 20% of the frame leaving lot's of pixels to play with.
If I can't get a usable subject size I don't bother taking the shot.
A good reason for getting a longer lens, or a full frame monster megapixel beast.
I think that is good advice but I guess that many of us still take the shot!
It doesn't work. I while working in central London the other day I went out to collect my lunch and was asked where the bank was and how to get to the Ethiopian Embassy. I work hard on my scowl but I was rumbled twice in quick succession!
I use compression: JPEG, and Olympus are the best.
