  • Windows 7

Just upgraded and found out that Microsoft got rid of the filmstrip view in their viewer. Why would they do that I can't understand it that was the only view I used. Looks like I'll have to find a new programme to use now anyone got any suggestions. Maybe I'm being a bit of a Luddite here but for anyone looking to upgrade from XP or vista I wouldn't bother it's been more trouble than its worth so far, even outlook express doesn't work!

    Re: Windows 7

I'm not a great Microsoft fan, but I found 7 to be pretty solid (upgraded directly from XP, all the chat I saw said to avoid Vista). Outlook Express has indeed disappeared, but you can download Windows Live Mail which does the same thing. It has all sorts of irrelevant fancy options, as usual, but it's easy enough to turn them off and just run it as a simple mail client.

Can't help with the filmstrip view, sorry.

    Ciao ... John

I recently upgraded from XP Pro to Windows 7 and would never want XP again. All hardware detected and installed automatically first time and not one crash. I still use XP Pro on my video editing PC and regularly get crashes. Life is so much easier with Win7.

          Phill,

Try Faststone. It's a good, easy to use viewer, plus some excellent edit facilities. Also its FREE

True, but it does not have the film strip view that Phil wants .

            Like this

??????? Yes it does for me Paul. It appears when you move the mouse pointer to the top of the screen when you select a shot.

My bad Bob, yes it does, I never realised that.

My excuse is I rarely use it as I am a lifelong ACDsee user.
                Regards Paul.

I am truly honoured to be able to teach you something you didn't know, Paul. I always avidly read your offerings to try and improve my knowledge of taking and processing photographs and I never ever thought I could offer something in return! I presume you know that if you point the mouse to the left and to the right of the screen, various options are available?!

I always use FastStone Image Viewer and thought it so good that I sent a donation to its author. I am constantly amazed at the extent of its facilities and that it will also open RAW files. I also use Noiseware which is also free but payment is required if you wish to keep the EXIF information.

I think that this is only my second post this year after my move to Dorset and whilst my cameras are not just sitting gathering dust, I've had little of interest to offer others. However, there are not many days that I do not log on to this site to try and absorb the knowledge of all you experts. So much is over my old head though.

                    Re: Windows 7

Why not just use Picasa? That does a small filmstrip of sorts at the top if I remember correctly.... or better still, just scroll through the thumbnails in the main window.

Thanks for all the suggestions I'll probably try them all. Derek, Picasa is one I've already tried it's very good and easy to use.
