Never having seen Aperture 3, i was curious to now how it wouild compare with lightroom three & does lightroom 3 run ok on Apple mac's as i was considering a change to the dark side. Again any bodys opinion how Apple Mac's compare with microsoft would be handy.
I get fed up with my normal laptop always slowing down despite trying to look after it.
My nephew (an army Major/front-line surgeon) has recently gone over to Mac (the 27 inch thingy) from PC (Win XP). He appreciates the great display, but says it locks up more than his PC ever crashed. He's not particularly computer-literate so hasn't done anything special with either the PC or the Mac - they are/were both straight off the shelf.

What's on your 'normal' laptop, Windows XP by any chance? Microsoft recommend you reinstall XP every six months, as unlike Windows 7 it's totally incapable of looking after itself and doing it's own maintenance.
EVERY single thing you install will slow XP down, and there's nothing you can do about it. Windows Vista is also a bit of a dog, as although it's better at self-maintenance than XP, it has so many bugs and annoyances that I'd probably rather use XP and stick to the reinstalling to keep it quick-ish.
But we are told that nothing ever goes wrong with iMacs
I suppose you could get a rogue one every once in a while, and very occasionally an application can freeze, but since the arrival of OSX, that won't lock up the machine.
As for the Aperture/Lightroom debate, I tried Lightroom, but decided to stick with Aperture because I am familiar with it, and it covers most of my needs.

Windows 7 is the dogs nuts.....
Windows XP on my office desktop hasn't been reinstalled in at least 2 years. SP3 has made it agreably stable.
I personally think Lightroom is the more rounded package, but each has some advantages and disadvantages. Lightroom will work equally well on a Mac as on a PC.
With regards to my laptop, i defrag it and also run avg with there version of clean up and speed up, it runs on vista which does not seem to be a problem apart from it seems to gradually slow down even after a clean out. My work pc runs XP and that still slows down even with reasonable space. This is why i am considering a macbook pro but they are bl**dy expensive but do you pay for what you get, i don't know. I was ticking the various boxes for the spec on Apple's site and Aperture 3 is one of the boxes, i already have lightroom three and that is why i was wondering how they compare (software + Applemacs ).
Well for a start you can save money on anti-virus and defragmentation applications, as they are not necessary on a Mac ;-)
OS X doesn't slow down in time, because of the different architecture of the OS.
Furthermore: you would be better of not to buy the boxed version of Aperture, but the digital download, which at the moment.
My youngest son just bought a MacBook Pro 15" for his study (with a bit of parental subsidy...) and I must say: it is a superfast machine.

Reason: typo
Viruses can and do exist on Macs, but it's very true that not many people write them because their architecture does indeed make them more difficult to do damage. But for safety, put an a/v program on a Mac.

I am sorry to disappoint you, Stephen, but there are no viruses on OS X.
Yes, there is Malware, but that is relying on 'social engineering'.
It tempts you to install a 'video codec' if you are interested in some private footage of Paris Hilton, that is.
But there is no malware that installs itself, without asking the admin user of the Mac for explicit consent.
Discuss Olympus Master, Studio and Viewer software applications as well as third party programs like Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Apple Aperture, and others.
I'd suggest you have a thorough demo of a Mac to see if they are for you.
Regards,
Mark
