How big is 9mm to 14mm? (4 Imgs.)

Hi,

Just playing with my new toy yesterday, and wanted to establish for myself how much I have gained in 5mm. I was surprised at how much!

My method was to take the same picture at 14mm, then 9mm. I overlayed the 14mm onto the 9mm in Photoshop. Apart from the 3rd one here, it was almost pixel-perfect. I blended with a colour overlay - so the red you see is in fact the real overlayed 14mm view!

Where I used the tripod and/or kept the camera straight, it was easy. Where the 14mm view meant I had to recompose to get the shot, you will see the overlay perspective change. However, I didn't move my body for these, just recomposed by tilting the camera.

I hope this is useful to someone. I thought it was better than the diagram with many lens comparison lines, as it shows real-world differences in the view I could get between 14mm and 9mm.

Finally - for 11-22 option...

By chance I took a shot with 11mm as well.

9mm to 11mm to 14mm.

Yes. Rectilinear I think they call it. I was impressed with the lack of distortion also.

I thought the overlay idea was suitable. I could match the actual 14mm picture, even with perspective.

For anyone interested, I copied and pasted the entire 14mm picture over the 9mm as a layer in Photoshop, then opacity 50% allowed me to "transform" the 14mm layer/image to fit exactly over the 9mm. Then, because they become invisible as you match the pixels, I selected a layer blend as colour with low opacity - so the 14mm image is identified easily.

Now - anyone got a 7-14mm? I think that 2mm also give a lot.

Wow! This is an old thread.

I'm glad people find this useful. I always just saw one picture with comparison lines for various focal lengths, and was not really able to judge as too many lines was confusing.

Glad to see others agree this is more of a "real world" visual aid.

Not really Stephen I'd prefer to see a image with a straight horrizon in the top third of the picture with no pp to judge distortion, it's the reason I will not change from the 11-22mm to the 12-60mm.

Love the work that's gone into this and the last overlay with the comparison of 3 sizes is the one for me. A simple idea in principle but I can only guess what work has gone into this - thanks!

It's a real shame that the images have gone from this thread. Any way it can be restored and kept as a technical archive somehow.
