  • 300mm f4...Rarely seen IQ like it.

I know it's no excuse for GAS but a dear friend of ours passed a couple of days back, that's two in as many weeks, so management and I decided to splash out a bit.

Whilst I have been extolling the virtues of the 75-300, and it still is INVHO, a very fine lens for the £'s, I thought it time to shift it and a redundant 7-14 Pro I had.

    It's all Jeff's fault.

I was so, so impressed by his initial results with the 300mm, his results are always good, but these were IMVHO, a cut-above.

    That's the way to go I thought, a 300mm f4 + TC1.4 to top it off.

OK, so it a lump, heavier than the 100-400 by some margin, but atop a monopod they both weigh the same.

OMDS are doing a £150 PX bonus on this lens at the moment, so I took advantage of that.

Both shots, hand-held, are SOOC jpgs, just resized and sharpened as I would usually do.

From the little testing I've done......it's one fabulous lens.

The first shot was 'the very first shot' and taken across the store.

The second from the garden with the in-camera x2 TC inadvertently switched on.

Hmm shame you got rid of the 7-14 I've been thinking about one of those for a while now. Definitely agree about the 300mm, allthough I don't think my copy is as sharp as yours or Jeffs. Or maybe that's just me!

my main advice after a few days use ,and i'm still in try it out mode is to make sure you have lots of hard drive space as your keeper rate will explode

I think it is one if not the best lens they make. You will never be disappointed with it.

The very first shot I took with it was in the shop of the cushion.
I looked through the EVF, first thing to impress me was the clarity, brightness and sharpness of the image....WOW.
Second thing to really blow me away was the speed at which the AF snapped into position and stayed there, static, due to Sync IS........WOW...WOW...WOW.

I guessed you were looking for a 7-14 Phill, but the figures + the £150 PX bonus made it a no-brainer.

            Plus, I'm a person of 'impulse'.........gotta-have-it-NOW

We are having a 300mm F4 love-in. And I totally am part of that affair.................

All down to Jeff telling us what we knew, but did not shout it to all. Well done Jeff, and Dave for bringing this to the all to note...

I’ll join the love in if I may. It is my most used lens, and I frequently use it with a 1.4 extender.

Is it really about the same as the 100-400? When I picked up my friend’s lens, I was shocked at how heavy it was. I thought it was a lot heavier than the 300mm f/4.

Edit… I honestly found it so hard to believe but of course you are right. Perhaps there is more weight towards the end of the front end of the lens, or perhaps I was having a weakling day when I held it 😂
