  • 26th Jan 2023 New firmware update for 300mm f4...

I spotted a heads up on DPReview that the 300mm f4 has new v1.6 firmware of which this is said....
    • Improved sleep recovery operation.

So just FWIW until there may be some insights......or perhaps someone might know by now

That’s Interesting. I wish they’d give more specific information on the change. The only thing I can think is something to do with waking up the camera from the sleep or quick-sleep state maybe improving the wake time. If that is the case, I would have it but I’ve not noticed any issues with the OM-1 really. My 300mm is out of warranty so if I bricked it doing a FW update that could be costly. I might leave it a while and see what the early adopters find!

I agree with Bill. I haven't noticed any issues with mine. Unlike my normal gung-ho approach I will wait and see on this one.

Looking back through previous updates for this lens, some were camera specific. I wonder if it is some improvement needed for the OM-1 operation that has been in the making for a while or something found with the new 90mm Pro IS lens development that needed both camera and lens updates. Having worked in software/ tech I always have a curiosity about these things! It does seem to be coming around the same time as the new lens coming and the “exciting announcement”.

I have just updated the lens. Very quick and easy. Note that Workspace also wanted to update too. Again, quick and easy................

Yet to see any difference with the lens, but time may tell...:-)

I have not updated the out of warranty lens. Do I really need it?

can't really see what difference it has made Henry, but it must be a worthwhile update I reckon. The lens has been around for a long time now..

Think I will not risk bricking it for the moment. It's pin sharp and i don't need it to instant startup yet.

Updated mine today. It took a few minutes, but all seems fine and the firmware is now at the latest version.

I have also updated mine with no problems using the OM Image Share App on my Android phone.

It was very easy and quite quick - when the update was applied the big OK showed on the camera screen then you just turn the camera off and it is done as per displayed instructions. As a precaution I removed the MC-14 teleconverter out of the equation, it reduces the number of electrical contacts the update data has to go through! Lens seems to be fine with some quick checks, I cannot tell any difference yet but will see what happens during a proper session.

Yes, I took the MVC-14 off for the update. and cards out. I think it played a game with my card settings though.. again..

I've just sent my 300 off for a short holiday in Portugal for a check-and-clean after an extremely dusty 18 days in Kenya, so hopefully it'll get updated there.
                Regards,

I've had a couple of glitches since this firmware update with the OM-1 and 300mm f4. During some fairly intense bird photography sessions with subject detect the camera suddenly just reset. It's not a lockup, more like the camera quickly switches off and on again and my custom settings reset to initial conditions. So the fast shutter speed and +2 exposure comp I had dialed in for BIF today on top of my custom set suddenly gone.

The first time I thought I'd accidentally pressed the lens release button but tried that and it doesn't have the same behaviour of resetting to my initial custom settings like a switch off / on.

Kind of weird and can't be sure it is related to the new firmware but this is the only thing that changed recently. I could clean my lens contacts and see if this persists.

Anyone else had issues like this?

My OM1 is Firmware v1.3 and 300 lens is v1.6.

I have had exactly the same thing happen after updating the 300 f4. The shutter speed and exposure compensation had changed. I had almost finished my session so I switched the camera off and decided to investigate when I got home. Those two settings were still wrong when I switched the camera on at home but all the other settings were ok. OM-1 firmware also v1.3

I have found on odd occasions, settings change in one of the custom menus. Though it seems only to happen in one. I thought it was me.

In my BIF menu, I have an EV value of +1 stop, to make up for the sky background. This seems to change for some reason...Not a major problem if it does not worse...
