  • Oly 100-400 to hire?

I have been contemplating getting the new Oly 100-400 due to its reach and compatibility with my MC14. I want to try some bird photography on Lundy in August. But as the lens seems to be in short supply I was thinking that hiring it may be a better option as I dont know how much I would use it at other times.
I can't find it on any UK site that hires Oly stuff, but has anyone come across one? TIA
    Dave

I'm guessing that they are just too scarce at the moment, even for hire companies. I'm sure this lens would be on constant duty from a hire outlet.

Ah - I misread you Dave - I thought you meant the 150-400; my apologies.

I'm thinking that they totally underestimated demand for these. I would probably have got one for this summer if they had been around in local shops

Maybe you could go for an MC20 to use on your 40-150 pro as an alternative for your trip?

HDEW have them on offer for £1139, I assume it is in stock as it is a bank holiday special.

Well I have decided not to buy the 100-400 as beyond what I wanted it for initially, I just don't know how much use I would get out of it. I can't hire it so I am thinking that hiring the Panasonic version might be a better bet. No, I couldn't use my MC14 with it and the dual IS wouldn't work, but it would give me 400mm or 800mm in old money. That is one option. Another is to hire the 300mm f4 Pro and pair it with my MC14. All the features of the lens would work and it would give me 420mm (840mm). The hire price difference between the two isn't a great deal. If I went for the first option, the zoom would give me more flexibility and I could leave my 40-150 Pro at home. No flexibility with the second option though (other than with or without the MC14) and I would probably have to take my 40-150 Pro......... I do know, from past visits that the birds will be a long way away likely needing the full 400mm range of the two options.

I would welcome your opinions about what I should do. I am posting this in a new thread as well.
