  • A few with the 150-400

    Had a nice day to Loch Leven last week.
    Took the long one to the hides.
    Its quite easy to carry cradled with a strap fixed to the slots on the lens.
    These were all nearly shot at 400 +1.25.
    What was pleasant was, when downloaded, most were 'keepers' so was able to concentrate on the behaviour rather than just the technical side.
    On the path from and to the car I had seen some Gean (Bird Cherry) and Blackthorn in bloom and wanted to photograph them.
    There was a breeze blowing, so rather than turning over to my usual 12-100 or 60 macro, I used the 150-400 at close focusing with all the other 'bird' capture setup in the camera still active.
    Close focusing is given as 1.3 metres (4ft3in) but that is from the focal plane not the front of the lens. Therefore you can get surprisingly close. The flaw would be the thin focus. I shall try with the multi focus at some point.
    Here are a few;

    Greylag and goslings.

    Lapwing (at extreme range really). Note focus is on the bird not the coo.

    I love the way the subjects you've (presumably! ) focused on really stand out.

      Generally open lens F6.3 at 500mm.
      Part of the setup is to use CAF+Tr which does a remarkable job of chasing the subject.
      The Raw files are uncropped and have only had a little increase in exposure, vibrance, saturation and clarity in Lightroom.

        Lovely photos, but at the price it's what one might expect. I'm at Barnes on 17th and look forward to being impressed in practice.

              Photos look great, nice and sharp. Next time your going along to the hides put up a post and I will come along and have a look at your lovely lens.

              I had the Pany 100-400 but was not happy with it, was thinking seriously about the 150-400mm but it is a big wad.

                A further thing I should have mentioned;
                Having gone through all the covid stuff over the last 14 months you would have thought the RSPB would want get cracking. No, the centre (and the carpark) is shut. From Mid April to mid August for an upgrade.
                so, they have no money coming in. And making people walk an extra half mile each way to the (alternative) carpark is just going to dissuade them from turning up at all.
                Some management.
