  • LH-76D Lens Hood for 100-400 and 40-150mm

I see that Wex have the LH76D lens hood for the new 100-400 lens available for pre-order

    The blurb:

”Тhе Оlуmрuѕ LН-76D Lеnѕ hооd hаѕ bееn dеѕіgnеd fоr thе Оlуmрuѕ М.Zuіkо Dіgіtаl ЕD 100-400mm f/5-6.3 ІЅ аnd М.Zuіkо Dіgіtаl ЕD 40-150mm f/2.8 РRО lеnѕеѕ. Іt mіnіmіѕеѕ flаrе vіа dеflесtіng ѕtrау lіght аnd рrеvеntіng іt frоm еntеrіng thе lеnѕ.

I wonder if Olympus will start shipping the 40-150 f2.8 with this new hood to save the exploding springs and ball bearings grief. It is listed as costing about £35 - I might get a spare.

I recall reading somewhere a while ago a suggestion that the 100 - 400 arca swiss tripod foot would also fit the 40 - 150 f2.8, but think that might have been an error as the 100 - 400 takes a new DR-79 decorative ring and the 40 - 150 a DR-66 ring, suggesting there's a difference around the barrel at the tripod collar location.

Anybody with both lenses who could confirm?

I rarely remove the tripod collar / foot from these lenses as I use it to attach a sling strap I use when carrying the camera and lens for miles. Otherwise I am likely to drop the thing! A shame the 40-150 f2.8 collar was never updated to have an arca swiss foot.

In a word no the collar doesn’t fit. I placed the 100-400 collar around my 40-150. The hood is a closer fit but I can’t get it to fit on my 40-150, feels like I will thread it.

At the risk of sounding thick, is this new lens hood for the 100-400 the same as the one it comes with or an upgraded version?

The one linked to Wex is the same as the one supplied with the 100-400, i’m just not convinced it is compatible with 40-150 having played around with it. All it is going to do is scratch my lens and probably damage my hood, no matter how hard I try the hood doesn’t sit straight and then goes below the thread of the lens.
It has no button to lock and secure/remove it just clicks in place.
I’m surprised Olympus didn’t use the same type of hood found on the 17,25,45 pro lenses they have a perfect mechanism, which includes secure and release button.

Correction the supplied hood for 100-400 does fit the 40-150. Albeit not the best mechanism.

I’m thinking about attaching a tripod plate with arca swiss to my 40-150 so i can attach it to my rucksack

Peak design v3 I hope to try it. Have you ever had one?

Ah not tried that I see - pretty neat how it attaches to the strap. I stopped using rucksacks after some shoulder surgery preferring light bags like a Think Tank retrospective type of bag or a sling bag - I just tend to over-load rucksacks!

I had the opposite issue my retrospective 3 caused me issues across my spine with it pulling diagonally so purchased a rucksack.

You can also attach the v3 clip to a belt I think.

I have tried the hood from the 100-400 on the 40-150. I find it fits well turns and click in place. The hood from the 40-150 does not fit the 100-400. The hood appears to have a slightly different locating grooves for the lens which must be unique to the 40-150. The quality of the 100-400 hood is not to the same standard as the PRO lens hoods. It is thinner and has slightly rough finish.

I do like the operation of the PRO lens hoods, 40-150 and 300 where you don't have to turn them to fit. I am aware some people have experienced problems with the 40-150 hood.

Surprised yours fits 40-150 well, maybe I’m just used to a nice fit if thats the case.

It fits the 40-150 the same as on the 100-400 lined up turned quarter of a turn and clicked into place. Feels secure as per the 100-400. Like I have said it is not the same quality as the PRO hoods.

My apologies I have managed to attach it to my 40-150. Once in place it is very firm and feels fine. The plastic itself is exactly the same quality as my 45 pro lens just the mechanism/feel when attaching and removing are not up to the Pro kind of feel IMO.
