  • Panasonic 100-400 vs 300 f4 information

    I can't find some information I'd like....

All the comparisons for the size of the Panasonic 100-400mm vs the 300 f4 show the Panasonic closed, not fully extended. Dimensions I've found are all for it closed...

If anyone has the time, and both lenses, could they do a side by side comparison/picture of the two with lens hoods and full extension on the zooooom?

    Many thanks in advance!

    Paul

(It looks like all the comparisons are aiming to show just how MASSIVEthe 300 f4 is in comparison to the tiny Panasonic zoom! )

Here is a comparison using the compare site.

Compare unlimited number of cameras with lenses, see how compact or bulky a camera is and sort by height, width, depth and weight.

I cant get a picture of the panasonic with hood attached but as you can see there isnt a great deal of difference IMHO. The hood on the Oly is fully retracted.

I've played with both. The 100-400 felt bigger in real world use.

I don't have the Oly 300, but I do have the Panny 100-400, and the extended lengths are:

          Fully extended 248mm
Fully extended plus the small hood 265mm
Filly extended with the large hood attached 300mm

          Hope this helps.

I have just measured my 300mm f4 and I make it 230mm with the hood retracted and 280mm with it extended.

Edited to add: the diameter of the hood is 92mm, if relevant.

              Many thanks for that!

That's the best I'd managed, the Panasonic is at 100mm and the hood on the 300 is retracted. suggesting the Panasonic is considerably smaller than the 300, which I know not to be the case!

                Many thanks to you both...

The length of the two are: 280mm and 300mm so bugger all difference in reality!

I think I'm going to await the Oly 150-400 + 1.25TC to see how much that is before jumping for a zoom on that basis!

The Oly 150-400 is much bigger than either of these two.

Indeed, but again the only size comparison I've found is for the 100-400 Panasonic on the outside of a display case, so I was trying to get an impression... I didn't think to take a photo of the 300f4 on top of the display case at the camera show this year...

Just going to phone my financial adviser and ask him to work harder on my pension so I can afford it!

Oh and my 300 has become a 300, 420 or 600 dependant on TC fitted!

I suppose I should say that adding the MC-14 to increase the focal length to that of the Panasonic gives an extended length of 295mm. As you say, there is nothing in it.

Oly 300mm+1.4 TC and the Pany 100-400mm.

Oly weighs 1.6kg, and the Pany weighs 1.04kg.

Without the TC on the Oly, they are almost exactly the same lenght (both erect! with lens hoods), and the Oly weighs 1.5kg................

PS. I don't have the tripod mount on the Pany...

Fantastic, many thanks. (I don't use a tripod mount on the 300! I prefer to wave it about aimlessly in the hope of getting something )

At the end of the day, I use the Oly +TC far more than the Pany.............
