The Panasonic Leica Nocticron 42.5 f/1.2 Lens Review & Comparison By Steve Huff BUY THE NOCTICRON AT AMAZON HERE BUY THE NOCTICRON AT B&H PHOTO HERE Hey hey! It is review time again and I have been a busy man shooting this Panasonic/Leica Nocticron lens for the past two weeks and let me tell ya,

After evaluating Panasonic’s high-end Leica 15mm f1.7 Summilux lens, we’ve continued the theme by assessing the firm’s ultra-high speed stabilized 42.5mm f1.2 Nocticron model. Read on to find out if this new lens can contend with the best offerings from its partner and rival Olympus.

I would use this quite a bit, but would have to sell a number of classic lenses to afford it: to be honest I use these rarely, so I'm quite tempted!

I'm going to find a shop where I can try one out - there may be handling issues and I'd want to be sure I like the combination with both the E-M1 and M5.
    Regards,
    Mark

I tried one out on a GH4 at The Photography Show earlier this year, the results were stunning to see on the viewfinder, it's chunky too but very comfortable to hold. It's designed by Leica built by Panasonic has got exotic glass inside it and I've been putting money by for it ever since.

It's not a lens for everyone after all you buy a lens like this to shoot at F1.2 not F8 or F16 for the smooth as silk bokeh and edge to edge sharpness. It's a portrait photographers ideal lens. I might have to sell some 4/3 kit to help fund it.

      Yes, that's really helpful, thanks.

They're advertising them at Digital Depot in Stevenage and at SRS in Watford - I've got to drive over to Dunstable tomorrow morning so as long as that commitment doesn't take too long I'll see if I can drop in to try one on both bodies.

I haven't invested in the Zuiko 45 since I didn't find it offered much of an aperture and focal length advantage over my standard 12-35 f2.8. The 42.5 is likely to be a whole other matter, however.

I'm not going to sell my old OM lenses because I take nostalgic enjoyment in using them, but I've got several nice Contax Zeiss and other assorted classics that I feel guilty about not using, and selling these & the adapters would nearly cover the new Panny. Erindoors would be happy, too!

To put that statement in context the 42.5mm f1.2 is 2/3rds of a stop faster than the 45mm f1.8 but has a slightly shorter focal length.

The 45mm f1.8 is a full one stop and two thirds faster (nearly 2 stops) than the panny f2.8 which is also a shorter focal length which also effects blurring.

The 45mm is a very good bang for buck when the price is took into account but of course you pays your money and takes your choice.
        Regards Paul.

Yes, of course I agree, which is why I gave the 45 a good try-out (and found it good but not stellar). The 45's also lighter, much more compact and has a usefully smaller filter size!

Nevertheless, the 42.5 is 2 and a third stops faster than the 12-35, with associated narrower depth of field, and its even sharper than the 75 (which I do have, and love). Compared to a fast short tele on a full-frame camera, in my experience one needs all the 4/3 aperture one can get in order to get good subject isolation.

Anyway, I'll give it a go tomorrow.

I have a Panasonic Leica 42.5mm f/1.2 at the moment on loan from Panasonic and I posted some thoughts and samples on Four Thirds User last month:

I love the lens; superb image quality even at f/1.2. But the Olympus m.Zuiko 45mm f/1.8 is so much cheaper...

              Great, thanks.

Unfortunately, because of some changed plans plus Digital Depot apparently not having a 42.5 in stock, I wasn't able to try it today. I shall be going past DD and/or SRS several times over the next few weeks, so I'll have another go then.
