I've just lashed out and bought some new toys.
A first problem has arisen. With the 12-40 fitted I only seem to have MF and no way to change to something else.
Another lens fitted lets me have all the focusing options.
Any suggestions as to how to fix this appreciated.

Just a thought Duncan.
The 12-40mm has a function button (L-Fn) on it. Has your camera got this button assigned to Manual?
Edit. Just checked the camera manual and page 148 says the default setting for L-Fn is "Af Stop". However it could also be what Ed and Steve suggest.

Check the MF focus ring if this is pulled towards the body you are in Manual focus push it forward away from the body and you should have AF and manual available to you. This happens often when you start using this lens. I often forget and leave it in manual

I've disabled the function for that button but no further luck.
If I get into focus, everything on the bottom line except MF is greyed out and I am unable to select anything else.
If you can see the distance marks immediately behind the model details written on the lens barrel, push the front focusing ring forward to disengage the clutch mechanism and return to autofocus.

I might take the camera back and get an Instamatic instead!

If all alse fails....Read the manual, as a last resort that is
The old adage " if in doubt read the manual " works but I would add or ask the forum; as not only do you get the answer but others get knowledge of things they might not have known. I my case this whole "back focus" idea which I still do not fully understand.
Also found on the 12mm and 17mm, brilliant for street work where auto focus can't be relied upon for an instant decision to get the shot; known from first-hand experience.
Yes I went mad and bought the 40-150 with 1.4 converter as well.
The first thing for me is to adjust the dioptre dial and you need to have autofocus working for that.
I use the eyepiece without glasses but cannot read the back screen without them.
