  • Just bought this on a whim !

The RMC Tokina DOUBLER for Olympus OM mount has a deserved reputation for delivering excellent optical performance. It actually came out top in a Practical Photography magazine test of thirteen four and seven element 2X teleconverters, beating the Teleplus MC7 by a small margin. It features seven element optical construction (not the standard four element), excellent build quality and Tokina's multi-layer coated optics (which help to reduce flare, improve contrast and allow more light to reach the film). A high quality optic to have in your camera bag for occasions when you need to get closer to the subject

well it all sounds good so I have now odered a om to 4/3 converter and am looking at some prime om lenses to have a bash with

        I can thoroughly recommend the Oly 100mm f2.8 - a gem of a lens.

I don't think you can realistically expect "excellent optical performance" from a third party teleconverter built for a film camera combined with a lens also intended for use on a film camera. That's assuming you intend to use them both at the same time on a digital camera. Your signature indicates that you already own several lenses covering the same focal lengths and I'd suggest if you have additional needs that they'd be far better served with a new lens. But best of luck and I hope for your sake I'm wrong in my prediction.

It would be interesting to see how good it is behind the OM 300mm f/4.5. The OM 2x-A and 300mm didn't work according to Olympus but editors never had a problem with the combination.

Re: Just bought this on a whim !

No disrespect intended! I've used some acclaimed Minolta, Olympus and to a lesser extent Sigma film lenses on micro four thirds and Fuji-X mirrorless cameras and been generally disappointed with all of them. Exactly the same story with old K-mount lenses on a newish Pentax K-5 camera. Metering, focusing and visible aberration issues with all of them and the inescapable conclusion that I could/should have done better and with a lot less effort.

I agree that you have very little to lose, except that it's very frustrating to visualise a good photo and then end up with poor quality when you've done nothing wrong with your own technique. As you know, Olympus make some superb digital lenses and having spent good money on several of them I can only conclude that in the end you get what you pay for.

But I can only repeat that I wish you luck and hope that you continue to enjoy your photography, which after all is what it's about.

I guess if legacy glass is so bad I'd better refund the license fees of any shots taken with mine.

Here's an Airbus A380 taken with the Oly Zuiko 300 4.5 and the 2x-A. This aircraft was at 38,000 feet

Do you receive repeat fees as well? You seem to make exactly the same point quite often.

I know what the OM 300mm and 2x-A combination is capable of. The Robin in my avatar is taken with them as the Robin is standing on my 600mm. While waiting for the Robin I grabbed some shots of House Sparrows mating, one of which was used in BBC Wildlife.
