  • Another lucky find!

As some of you may be aware, I recently became the proud owner of a rather lovely Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 85mm lens that my friend came across in his loft...I'm loving using it and have had some excellent results. It's really whetted my appetite for manual lenses!

One of my other friends remembered that he also had his dad's camera gear in the loft and today, finally, after months of nagging, he managed to drag it out for me to have a look at.

Lo and behold, another Zeiss lens!

Well, there are two lenses that I may be interested in, so I'd value your opinions as to whether or not they are worth adding to my collection. I can use both of them on my Olympus e520 with the adapter I purchased for the Sonnar.

The first is another Zeiss lens, although I have to say it doesn't feel anywhere near as good quality and build as my Sonnar. This is what it says on the front of the lens....

electric MC S1:3,5f=135 CARL ZEISS JENA DDR 10491502

The second lens is marked thus...

    PENTACON auto 1.8/50 MULTI COATING

Both appear to be in absolutely pristine condition, but I haven't had chance to try them out yet.

I'd be very interested to hear what you guys think. Are they worth adding to my collection of lenses, or should I pass them by?

    Janet

PS. I've also posted this on a manual focus forum, and been advised that the 135mm lens is actually another Sonnar! Happy days!

I'm not an expert in these things, but I think the Pentacon will have come from a Praktica. Probably not the best lens in the world, but certainly worth trying before you decide. Well done you!

You're spot on Stephen. It was found with a Praktica.

They both would have come with a Praktica and are very useable lenses. The 135mm sonnar - yes another - is very well regarded and about as good as a 135mm gets if you have an OK example. Although the glass is very good the quality control wasn't and they often need an overhaul.
Worth keeping and using! Google the CZJ 135mm to see how much they go for...

        Edit:
Just seen your other post... so you know!

            Re: Another lucky find!

i have an old Practica that was my first SLR and I have that same 50mm Pentacon lens. I seem to remember it wasn't a bad one. I also ended up with a Pentacon 135mm f2.8 lens and a 29mm f2.8.

Of course in those days we just took photos or slides and mostly didn't enlarge anything enough to check on details like we do now!

I have wondered about getting a Practica screw thread adapter and seeing how they perform.
