  • HELP! Olympus WCON-P01 Wide Converter and MCON-P01 Macro Converter

After 4 years with Olympus E-1 and some lenses I was convinced to try the Micro 4-3 world and just bought a brand new E-PL1 with 14-42 Gen. 2 kit lens. The idea of a very small system makes me wonder how good are the Olympus WCON-P01 Wide Converter and MCON-P01 Macro Converter. I am quite impressed from what I read about these converters. What is your experience with them? Can you post samples - best if compared with normal wide and macro lenses. Thanks!

The MCON is a bit of a waste of time on the 14-42 as it only reduces the minimum focus length by a few centimetres. It's more effective on the 40-150mm. The WCON is more effective on the 14-42mm of course. It doesn't give you any extreme effects but it does open up the angle a fair bit.

Any sample images? I think that's the most important factor.

Just had a quick look through my pictures and this one was taken using the WCON on the 14-42mm. I'll check for others when I get the chance.

Does anyone know if there is a gain to be had from using the macro scene mode when using this converter ? I have an OMD EM-1 and wondered if the camera tried to do anything clever in this mode.

There may be some benefit but basically all it is going to do is keep the shutter speed quite high to counteract any motion blur.

Is being used on the 14-42?

It's used on a 14 - 42. I'm since led to believe that the Scene mode only corrects minor aberrations at the image edge so probably better to use Aperture priority mode.
